Service Industry

Anyone else in recovery, but work in the service industry?

Looking for other people that work in the industry for support. I love being a server and don’t have plans to give it up. I’m about to come up on one year of sobriety.

Would be nice to have a support group of others that work in the industry. In the past I’ve dealt with a lot of negativity of people saying to get a new job and that you can’t be sober in this industry. Please make this a judgment free zone :folded_hands:

I’m pretty sure @Just_Laura is in your industry and several others on here, no doubt. As I see it, we can thrive & be happy in any industry we want & as long as we’re sober life just works!

That I am @Smitty97  10 years serving/bartending and 2.5 years sober. I love my job, even more now, and obviously do it better bc I was promoted to manager shortly after I quit. I am fortunate to have so much support at work. The GM’s 30yrs sober, the old bar manager was 30yrs, and the current bar manager is 7yrs. Plus everyone else who saw me at my worst (blacking out at work) and only wants the best for me now.

The way I see it, you can’t hide from alcohol forever, so you need to learn how to live with it or it’ll be a struggle. Plus, if I’m gonna drink, I’m gonna drink. It doesn’t matter where I am. Half the time I drank the alcohol at work was only bc I ran out of the alcohol I brought with me to work and ‘needed’ more. So it should work the other way too. I don’t drink, I’m not gonna drink and it doesn’t matter where I am. It’s honestly not as hard as people assume it is :hugs:

Nice topic :sparkles: And well done closing in on that year

I’ve been cheffing for 30 years 22 of them in hotels an restaurants and to tell you the truth there was nothing like a few pints after a long tough service.

I ended up having to change scenery about a year into my recovery and went into day time industrial catering, offices, factories that kind of stuff, its worked out very well for me,less pressure all round and weekends off.

There are ways around your question without coming out of the industry,

Wish you well :+1:t2:

I work at Jiffy Lube part time as a Lube Technician which is pretty entry level, I love it and I get to work whatever hours I want.

does that count?

edit: misunderstood topic no we don’t serve alc at jiffy lube

maybe we should

recovery gets over-thought a LOT I just don’t do drugs (except for my RX’s) or drink alcohol or consume marijuana anymore

loooots of coffee and nicotine tho lol
