Seven years ago today, I promised myself that I would never drink again, and I have kept that promise. This simple exercise in self-discipline saved me from death.
My drinking had entered what I refer to as the “terminal stage”. I suspected that my wife was mentally preparing herself to divorce me, which would have lead to a slow sad spiral into the grave. She confirmed this after I was sober for 6 months: she finally felt secure that my sobriety was serious, and she could stay married to me.
Much has happened in the intervening years. I’ve had more blessings than sorrows. My marriage is strong. I have a great relationship with my adult kids.
One of the central pillars of my sobriety has been my study of martial arts. During the last seven years, I went from white-belt student to black-belt instructor, became a full-time instructor and school manager, and as of October 1st of this year, I opened my own school. I now work for myself.
None of this would have happened had I not chosen sober-life over drinking-death. I’ve had a lot of support and encouragement, but the choice to say “no” to the drink that matters…the first drink, always rests with me.
For those struggling in early sobriety, stay sober today and you make tomorrow possible.
This is impressive way to go with your 7 years of sobriety . Grateful to hear of all the success and stability a sober journey has provided. Keep working your recovery
Your goal oriented approach to staying sober has been inspirational for me. Getting to witness you achieve those goals has been awesome! Congrats on your own studio, being fully present for your family and being an outstanding member of your community!
Congrats @Yoda-Stevie. Not many stories like yours around so thanks for sharing yours with us. Very inspiring indeed. Hope you’ll still kick as much ass in another seven years time.
Congratulations on the life you have so successfully crafted through commitment, tenacity and wisdom.
You’ve been an unwavering pillar of strength and guidance here that I know has had a positive influence on many. Between your time here, and now your time with your students, you are helping create the change in others. Good change.
