This is cordage that I’ve made from banana skins (black) and Dracaena leaves. I’d like to incorporate cordage into my wood turned bowl somehow.

Adding to my cordage collection. The pink is rhubarb and the green is stinging nettle. I also made my first tiny coiled basket.

I’m 47. I’m artistically illiterate. When I was 12 I took a woodshop class and I made a wooden mailbox and a wooden car amongst other things. Anyways, the mailbox is still existent at the house I grew up in even though my parents sold it in 1999 and my brother and his family have the car on their family room mantle. That teacher was a Saint. I don’t remember him ever doing any work for me yet I produced art I never did before or since. I randomly googled him yesterday and he died in 2022. Bless you Kenneth Kettwig, you’re a fantastic man.

The bottom image is burdock cordage. The burdock stalks need to be bashed with a pestle until the fibres come away from the pith. Above that is dandelion stalk cordage. All you need to do is pick the dandelions, dry them and then re moisten them to make them easier to work with.

Today day I was back in the wood workshop and had my first shot of their new lathe. The tools had also been freshly sharpened, and it was like cutting through butter. So satisfying! I made these three pincushions out of a piece of oak that had come from a church.

These and the pin cushions are magnificent. It makes me want to start working/playing with this artwork. I bet it is so fulfilling to see finished work. I crochet, knit and do puzzles but haven’t had any completion. Now sober I need to make this a priority. Although my kitchen meal creations I am mastering.

More cordage experiments. At top left we have rhubarb, then going clockwise we have two lots of daffodil leaf, a tiny bit of yellow flag iris and then the grey piece is Canada thistle.

This bowl was made with reclaimed wood which is possibly teak wood. 19cm ø, 7cm deep. I’m now covered in reddish wood dust.

I’ve been doing bits of customisation on furniture lately… This is contact sheet covering. I’m pretty pleased with how it makes a slight quirky difference.
