Show the artist within you (Part 2)

Yes, well I mean it done digitally in procreate. But done as if it was on canvas. All hand stenciled and colored.

I love that you posted the pic of your work on the editing software! I was thinking about you today! About how much time you must put into editing all your amazing videos for your channel. Im sure u sometimes spend more time editing than taking the raw footage? So I had a down weekend with not much to do and I figured Id try to edit up some climbing footage I took over the summer. Before yesterday I knew nothing about editing video. Well now I know just enough so that my mind is blowing up with thoughts and ideas and questions about putting together a decent video! I spent most of the day today experimenting with the software (i installed shotcut because its freeā€¦) and hacking together 3 separate climbing videos into 1 25 minute first cut. I enjoyed it!

Bye for nowā€¦

It does take a lot of time editing videos. Especially when Iā€™m using multiple cameras. Itā€™s worth the extra effort though. The Insta360 cameras have made it easier. Iā€™d have to run five or six GoPros to gets what two Insta360s can do and it wouldnā€™t be as good.

The Instas have editing software thatā€™s pretty easy to figure out. It does 90 percent of my workflow. I have been editing at two to four times faster than real time for the insta footage lately which speeds up my workflow. Thats something recent that I have figured out.

All the dots on the bottom tool bar are changes on the camera angle, both positions and zoom. This is where the 360 cameras shine. You can cut and adjust speed with this software too. I usually adjust the speed in Vegas Pro.

I bought Vegas Pro 17. It was 200 dollars. Inexpensive compared to other software. I like it. Its invasive though. Constant pop ups, and advertisements. That gets annoying. When I upgraded to version 18 right after I did that, they started flooding me with version 19 pop ups. I would have skipped 18 if I had known there was a version 19 available. I felt like I was getting double charged. I havenā€™t upgraded anything since.

Vegas Pro has a big learning curve. I only know the basics, but there are plenty of tutorials out there. Its capable of doing a lot.

Editing software is expensive. Vegas Pro had the most bang for the buck. Adobe products are a monthly subscription which I find annoying. I already pay for photoshop and rarely use it. If Iā€™m short on cash for the month I canā€™t use it. I didnā€™t want that for my videos.

It would be easy to accumulate a 3 to 5 hundred dollar a month subscription fee for adobe products. It doesnā€™t make sense to me. Adobe is greedy.

If Iā€™m running three cameras for the day I will record 2 terabytes of footage. It takes about three hours to upload the footage to my computer, and about an hour per camera to rig the batteries and tape all the connections to waterproof them. Itā€™s a lot of effort. I do all of it before I get on the boat.

It takes at least eight hours per video. Itā€™s really easy to not catch a tiny error in editing until after Iā€™ve uploaded a video to YouTube. Editing videos makes me sleepy.

It has kept me out of the bars and It feels good. Thereā€™s no way I could do it if I was drinking. The stats on my channel have taken off recently. Iā€™ve been getting three to five new subscribers a day lately. That feels good too.

Wow! Thanks for the details! I need to get to work this morning but I will reply later to let you know what I have learned on my first editing attempt. Have an excellent day!

Keep posting! I love seeing your work and all the different ideas and styles you do. Its inspiring!

Youā€™ve got a great eye behind the lens! Your photos are awesome! I find filming to be an extension of photography. If a photo is worth a thousand wordsā€¦ A film is a book.

Editing film is like painting with photos. My Skipper sometimes gets annoyed with me filming all the time, but he loves and appreciates the videos.

My latest YouTube video.

Taken with two 360 cameras shot at 50 frames per second. Real time film is 25 frames per second so I can slow this down 50% without it getting choppy.

Here is the full video already cut in Vegas Pro18

The top column is railcam and drone footage. The second column is railcam sound muted.
Third is headcam, fourth is muted headcam sound and 6 is music.

This is zoomed to show the percentage I adjusted the speed of the camera footage.

Thanks dude! If Iā€™m not mistaken you are going to be the skipper of your own vessel at least thatā€™s what I thought I read awhile back so I hope thatā€™s still working out for you!
I love that saying a photo is worth a thousand words so I will post this pano I stitched together some years back, before you could simply do panos on a cell phone. Anyone that has climbed 14ers in Colorado might recognize these mountains. Seeing this pic on a phone doesnā€™t do it justice.

Dude with the quality work you are producing with your efforts and passion for it I want to see you getting paid. I canā€™t help but think this might open up some doors in the future for you.
2tb?? Holy crap thatā€™s a lot of raw footage to work through! For the simple lil climbing vid I am working on Iā€™m only dealing with less than 2gb.
Whatā€™s your computer setup? You must have ssdā€™s and plenty of fast memory?

Here is a shot of my project

Bottom track is an audio track of ambient music I found on free music archive
Tracks 1 and 2 are the climbing vids
Track 3 is an image track.

I shared a first cut with my climbing partner today and he was like wow what a sweet movie! I thought that was funny because when I watch it all I see are issues with the cut I want to re-edit.

Iā€™m going to keep working on it. Thanks for all the inspiration jason!

This summer I will be fishing my boat. Im excited about the filming/photography freedom I will have.

I havenā€™t made any money with my cameras yet. I havenā€™t really put myself out there. I plan to. Iā€™m getting closer to having all the requirements to monetize my YouTube channel. Its finally taking off. It was getting a little discouraging. Iā€™ve done a lot of research on building a successful channel. All the advice I saw was to keep making videos. Itā€™s been working. A few of my older videos have been bringing new traffic to my channel.

This PC is now 2 years old. Itā€™s pretty fast. I keep buying additional hard drives as I need them. I bought it for editing videos, so I went with a powerful one.
