I am 46 years old and have been struggling with drugs and alcohol for the last 30 years.
I have been sober for 10 days now. I was going to Aa and CR meetings for about 11 months and I joined a 12 step class during that time and it lasted 9 months.
During that whole time i did not stay sober for more than 9 days. I am bi-polar type b and wanted to take meds again. The crazy mood swings made being sober really difficult. So i find a psycolgist and I was honest about everything including my drinking.
On top of the bi-polar meds she perscribes me meds that take away my urge to drink. And if i do then i will get violently ill.
So that is where i am at and i really hope i will stay sober this time. I hope the meds make a difference.
Welcome to the forum! Congratulations on ur 10 days of freedom! I too also began using drugs and drinking at age 16 and was also diagnosed with a mental health illness. When i got clean my moods really got extreme and difficult to manage. Meds helped me alot honestly to manage my intense emotions and to also decrease my anxiety. I really hope that meds help u too. I really applaud your courage and honesty in seeking the help u need. Thats not easy to do. Hope u stick around and also get the extra support u need thru this forum. It has done wonders for my recovery
Im bipolar type b too i dont think id be able to maintain sobriety without addressing the mental health aspect too. Id love to chat about your experience sometime!
This community, AA, the 12 steps, meds, therapy, and exercise have been key to me maintaining sobriety for 16 months after 20 years of addiction. Check in, read around often
Welcome to the community Spenser - congrats on your double digits.
Great that you are doing AA and CR meetings. I do hope that you can find meds that will help your bi-polar and your urges to drink.
Do hope that you take time to read through the threads and jump in when you are ready. I do find that the more active i am on here the easier it is to fight the urges. Do hope to see you around.
