So I’ve been noticing recently over the past month or so on the news a lot of stations talking about how the younger generation are taking a different lifestyle approach to drinking. Sober bars are opening up in NYC, people are realizing that it’s actually cool not to get drunk AND it’s better for you! I am one who’s all for this as I make my own mocktails and just love having fruity drinks out of a wine glass. I know it’s not for everyone but if it works for you, why not? What do you guys think? Here are some links I found
I personally love this idea! I read that in Australia 20% of adults say they “don’t drink at all”. Within that, there must be a fair chunk of people wanting to socialise sober?!
Hope the idea takes off for the younger partiers
I have read that the new generation coming of age is very anti-drinking. Probably another thing that they see their parents do that is lame. (LOL - what kid uses Facebook today…that’s for OLD people).
Unfortunately I’ve also read that they are not necessarily sober…they are smoking way more pot that previous generations. There seems to be this misconception that it’s a plant, it’s natural, it’s medicinal, therefore it is harmless.
So, without opening these links (sorry, I’ve got to get to a meeting soon), are these bars just alcohol-free or are they fully sober? I would LOVE for there to be sober bars for my kids as they grow up.
I just watched a story on The Today Show! I was telling my husband that it would be awesome if these were everywhere. I would love this!
That looks great. I checked and there are none in my city but there are a few with a large non alcoholic menu section and with great nerdy themes.
I would also take the opportunity to plug board game cafes as a fun hangout. They have been a big trend for a few years so most large cities should have one now.
Would love to see this in Ireland but doubt it !!
Maybe I at least get a t-shirt that says I was sober before it was cool?
The one thing to keep in mind is that abstention does not equal sobriety. I am a fucking alcoholic, not a hipster looking to be cool and catch the next “thing.”
I give a big tip of the hat to people who wants to experience abstinence. That’s all. Don’t necessarily think it’s about being cool just a new trend that I wish was around when I was younger
There has been a lot of talk about opening up a sober bar here in Pittsburgh. I know that the thing I miss the most about drinking is, well, the bar. I drank almost completely out at the bar in the last 3 years of my active alcoholism, one of those bargaining things, and I do miss having that place to go after work before I go home.
That being said, I wish these places could be branded as something else, not a bar. But, I understand business and social evolution, so this is kind of the stepping stone to something different. It would be amazing to have a completely sober social place that didn’t have to take place at an AA/NA clubhouse, but from a business standpoint that probably wouldn’t work. Not that I’ve over thought this at all…
I’m in the “wait and see” club on this one. Hopefully it will evolve into something bigger. Haha, something that even “old ladies” like myself would feel comfortable at.
Fun night out without alcohol. Nothing wrong with that!
This just came across my radar. Apparently the trend continues!
Also happy 3 years btw! #SoberTwin
Girl, I’m with you!!! I love a mocktail, makes me feel like I’m not being a total square bear, even though I am! Lol started that trend when I was pregnant and nursing with my son and I felt left out during summer time shenanigans. Lol!
Plus they look fancy, and they are still yummy to sip on!!
I’m fine with this. I am actually an Ambassador for a NA brew. And actually that has helped me quit in the past more than anything because I never really drank for the feeling unless I wanted to hide from life (that was my problem was hiding and not dealing with issues); I am one of those weird people that just like the taste. One opened up in Denver that someday I’ll get up there and check out. I know it’s not for everyone and I know some in recovery that I won’t mention NA brews to because I am afraid it will make them want the “feeling” and drag them back.
Omg Kev I forgot your username on here to wish you a happy 3 years-so good to hear from you! Happy 3 fuckin years sober twin!!!
