Sober in the food service industry

I’ve searched and scoured the internet looking for resources on how to cope with being sober in a food service environment. I serve alcohol as part of my job and it’s a good job, I make great money and while I am trying to get out of the industry the plan will take a few more years. Anyone have any tips on how to cope while alcohol is literally offered to me at the end of every shift and I serve and watch people enjoying alcohol whilst they have their dinner? Anything besides “find a new job” would be helpful. I know this isn’t the best recovery environment but I don’t have the option to just get a new job. Websites, books and other resources appreciated.

Hi @Meyley, welcome :wave:t2: :innocent:

I don’t have direct experience of that myself but there are many people who have posted about that over the years here. If you search “bartender” or “bartending” in the search bar, you’ll find a bunch. You could also try “food service” but I’m not sure if that term has been as common.

Take care and don’t give up. Keep checking in and keep an open mind and stay determined - you’ll find what you need.

There have definitely been other folks here who work in the restaurant industry. I hope they don’t mind me tagging, but @Faugxh also serves alcohol. I think there are a few threads too, you can search using the magnifying glass at the top menu bar. I found this one, maybe it’s a way to connect with other folks. Glad you’re here looking for support!

I did it for many years when I was younger. I think when I got married and then had my son it became just a job and not my social thong anymore.
Once you turn down the freebies a few times it’ll be your new normal.
Maybe get a dessert to take home, lol

There is a group called https://www.bensfriendshope.com/
which is specific to sobriety in the hospitality sphere.
I’m former hospitality and want to send you strength on your journey. It’s hard but it’s worth it.
