Any advice for someone new to a sober living house?

Welcome to the sober time forum Caroline. I found this app indispensable to my journey in sobriety. I hope you will find it useful as well.
I am a resident manager of a sober living home in northern California. The most important advice I would give to you is do not waste your time Caroline. Do not just sit around and watch TV and smoke cigarettes. You are not there for a vacation. Use your time wisely, go to meetings get a sponsor, work a 12-step program. Get the big book from AA/NA and read, study them along with the 12 x 12 from AA. Learn about your addiction. Alcohol and drugs are but a symptom of the causes and conditions.
I’ve seen people come in here and turn their lives around within a year-and-a-half, acquiring good jobs, getting married, buying a car and a house. It can be done but it takes a lot of hard work and honesty, willingness, and acceptance. You will find new friends in the fellowship of AA / NA and the meetings after the meetings you will find most important to your sobriety as well. Caroline if you ever need to talk please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. Good luck with your journey in sobriety my new friend.

My advice would be follow the rules. Some places have a one strike policy (even if they say they don’t) and will kick people out for one failed drug test.

All I have got to say is BOOM! What a perfect reply.

I saw this question last night right before I went to bed. I didn’t reply because I had zero experience with sober living houses.
But I did know that somebody would Reply. This is a big forum with lots of different experience.

so Thanks for sharing

I’ve not lived in a sober living house, but since you have some time on your hands I’d HIGHLY recommend an IOP program on top of everything else. They tend to be dual diagnosis/co-ocurring disorders and spend a lot of time on how your mental health affects you recovery. Also, how your mental health affects your addiction. I would NOT be where I am today without it!
