Can you ever forget that scream when she sees ET for the first time?

This is so SO inspiring to me. Maybe it can help some of you too. Toby McGuire really touched me, I had no idea

I think it’s great that she has gotten sober again but I can’t help but be concerned that she drank again after her history. I think it’s a reminder to us all that we can’t “drink like a normal person” no matter how many years of sobriety we have.

(Not judging her, though. Alcohol is cunning!!)

I have a folder on my phone with articles from celebrities and recovery. Ones I’ve saved are for Rob Lowe, Anthony Hopkins, Brad Pitt, Dylan McDermot, and Fiona Apple. It’s comforting to me to know that even people who seem to have it all will still struggle with this poison.

Séan McCann from the Canadian (Newfoundland) band Great Big Sea is sober. He’s got a book too that touches on his addiction, music etc but I’ve not read it yet

Love Great Big Sea……I was surprised to hear his story. I’m so glad he is sharing.

Grace Slick has been sober for many years. Apparently she was quite a handful during the addiction years.

Tweaked title so others find thread.

Also thought about Robin Williams. Inspiring man, even if a sad ending. Love him.

I can remember my mam getting up on stage to sing it shortly after Lena did.it. we were at a Scottish gathering. After she did it once she was always asked to get up and sing it. Happy memories.

Ivan Moody. Lead singer of five finger death punch. He was kicked out of his own band because of how bad his alcoholism had gotten. It took that plus siezures/coma to finally get sober. At a recent concert I was at he asked if anyone was in early sobriety. He pulled the guy on stage with almost 30 days, gave him the baseball bat he carries around with him and told him " make alcohol your worst fuckin enemy". Kind of a little eye opening. He’s almost 4 years sober today

I notice I used to glamourize celebrities with addictions. I used to become obsessed with their music, their sadness, their stories… listening to their depressing music while I was wasted. Use it to excuse myself from the following days hangover. Tell myself it was the lifestyle of the misfits and those who didn’t care what society thought of them. Within them I had someone to relate to. I’m sure I found comfort in it in a cathartic kind of way.

Now that I am on the path of recovery, I want to do the exact opposite. I want to find icons of sobriety. People who can serve as inspiration and be role models of sobriety.

I hope that makes sense. I dont’t know if anyone else can relate to that, but so far I’ve found Mackelmore and Eminem’s stories and interviews about sobriety have been helpful. Please share if you have any others!

I’m a sad sappy music fan as well who always gravitated toward celebrities with pain. Now when I watch movies I’m the first to tell my husband which actors are sober.

Lead singer of FFDP. I was at a concert where he pulled someone with one week sober on stage, hugged them, gave them the baseball bat he carries around on stage and told them no matter what don’t give up.
