Sober Selfies #4

Thanks! I’ve had it forever but it never loses its style. Planning to get an octopus tattoo. Just procrastinating making the appointment, but I should bc I’m sure the guy is booked for months.

Man, you have all my respect. Your profession is no easy one, let alone trying to get sober. Especially trying to get sober while still working as a firefighter in the craziest city ever!

Keep up the good fight, my friend. And thank you for what you do.

Thanks Megan, I love what I do. Charge into a burning building? Easy peasy :sunglasses:… now, quit drinking for good?? :cold_sweat::cold_sweat::scream::scream: FML how the hell can I even comprehend… the hardest part will be attending all of our Firehouse functions… Firemen DRINK!!!.. from company picnics, softball games, bowling night, Boys Night Out, Xmas party, Beach Days, BBQs at someone’s house etc… theres always a cooler of more beer than is necessary… and theres nothing like bonding with other men and women (that you literally put your life on the line with) over some well earned cold ones… but what do I know of real “fun” I suppose… I’ve only got 5 days under my belt. Fortunately they are all aware of how serious alcoholism is and they respect when someone is trying to get sober.

Firefighting is a family business on my Mom’s side. Two great grandfathers, six uncles, five cousins are or were firefighters. Had I not joined the Marines right out of High School, the I’d likely have become a firefighter myself. Something that also runs in my family is alcohol abuse. Many of those uncles eventually quit drinking altogether.

Yes, there is a bonding ritual between men over drinking. I can understand this, as I am a retired Marine. I can say that you can still bond sober. Deep down inside they appreciate the self-discipline it requires to stay sober. I often hear “good for you brother…wish I could. My life would be a whole lot better if I did.” They could, if they chose to, but that is for them to decide. Me? I’ve chosen the hard path, because I know that it leads to life, and the easy path leads to destruction.

Last weekend I attended a Krav Maga advanced camp on a beautiful piece of land in PA. World renowned trainers and serious practitioners. These are hard men and women. Saturday night was a barbecue/social and there was alcohol…lots of alcohol. I don’t drink and my friend and main training partner chose to be sober. We saw serious people whose abilities we respect, start acting silly and stupid. We left early. They were hurting on Sunday, and we still had a full day of training ahead of us. Who got the most out of that day? Me, or them?

Day 5, feeling better than yesterday! Two huge cups of herbal tea to help me relax after work. Hope you’re all thriving and strong as ever :butterfly::heart:

My advice? Don’t go for a little while. You will have people who respect your decision, and others who don’t get it, but once you start coming back around they will see such a huge difference they won’t even remember not getting it. And then you become a beacon of hope for some of those others who are still struggling, because you are doing it, and it shows.

But for now, CONGRATS of 5 days. It can’t be easy in your line of work.

Also, don’t try to comprehend sobriety or recovery. Roll with it. Take it as it comes. You will be surprised how much your gut knows and how much better of a path it will lead you down. You seem a LOT like me. Different jobs, but the thriving under stress and chaos is common ground. You are trained to make the right decisions. So listen to that instinct for a while and keep moving forward.

Is this from that ReFace app that everyone is using? I’ve seen it used with short videos too. It’s pretty crazy how good it can be.
