I would be hesitant to employ anyone in the same position to be honest. It wouldnt be anything to do with the persons ability to do the job later in soberiety; it’d be my concern for the persons well-being whilst in such early stages of recovery, while working a program and whilst on Naltrexone. This is me talking from the opinion of an addict in recovery and that stage of sobriety is very touch and go.
From the opinion of an employer who has not had any experience with addicts in recovery, it does not surprise me at all that they would rather take someone else; ultimately, they have a business to run and the sad reality is that most employers dont fully understand the reasoning behind relapse. I dont think its unreasonable for an employer to protect themselves… I do think employers need to be more aware of the mental health problems behind addiction but it is changing and it is getting there.
