I am so glad this thread is here. I have not gone and read to catch up with everything posted. Just jumping in now. I am 8months and 2 days sober and at 1 month a Created a discord community for people outside of religion and AA. It rose quickly to over a hundred users but it became too much of a time suck for me. Now I have a small group of atheist alcoholics that I stay I contact with but I think It’s nice to diversify support. I will also post a Google spread sheet here of atheist and agnostics sobriety zoom meetings 24/7. Many of them are 12 step aa but smart recovery and dharma and satanic recovery groups are listed too.
I am an atheist and I do not subscribe to AA’s big book’s idea of agnostic but I have found that through the pandemic many groups have risen up over zoom that respect true atheism. Not “my higher power is a group of drunks”. Not all the meetings are like that but some are. I also don’t do the 12 steps but it’s nice to be surrounded by sober atheists in a zoom for an hour.
Hahah always
Oh damn that gave me a good laugh
I needed that. Very appropriate with how my work day is going.
I started reading thread on day one…should’ve replied with my support then…
I’m spiritual…3.5 years sober, mostly a user, but sometimes contributer to this forum…
To be clear, amongst others the “Checking in Daily”& “Sober Selfie” threads on this forum helped me get sober…
Be well peeps
Hi all, been reading this throughout the day but not properly as last day at work before leave. Thanks to everyone, will go back and read properly soon.
Just wanted to tell my fellows atheist/agnostic friends that they are amazing! You are here and you’re sober…. That is fantastic! I really do feel so great about this thread and the support I’ve seen through it… no matter who tried to knock it out… we are here and it’s great
Never fails
Not even sure why but hearing so many people get so upset about this thread is making me emotional… idk why. I feel like we haven’t done anything wrong… Idk… I’m happy I’ve met some great people on this thread but man… hearing how this one thread is making people feel has me like upset and a little hurt…I know I shouldn’t let people make me feel this way… I guess I just feel really put off by it… I really appreciate you all in here
I didn’t realize people were upset by this thread. I’ll go take a look. That’s crazy!
No, it’s not even worth it to look… I just wanted to say that you are all so great and I appreciate you all
Because it’s different,
Cultural differences, and ignorance can lead to anger and hostility as well as negative emotions.
Growing up strictly religious in my household with a lack of understanding or proper education of anything outside of catholic nuns beating you with rulers. You are taught to be closed minded, but upset with anyone who’s not your kind
Religion or lack there of is one of those hotspots especially in sobriety, it’s almost like talking politics in a bar.
I said it before, many people here have a devout faith, and that’s there choice, I won’t infringe on their rights. But it goes Both ways
And honestly, long live the Flying Spaghetti Monster
It’s just not a good feeling when all you want to do is find people you can resonate with and have so many people upset by it… idk maybe this is triggering to me but I am actually a mess rn… ugh… religious trauma is real and idk… this is a lot
I get that your gonna be ok, take a breather, talk if you need to talk, a lot of my fucked up trauma is posted on the forum, just search my name you find something to resonate with,
Thank you Chris… I appreciate you
There are a lot of atheist alcoholics out there. I have met many of them thanks to the way zoom and the pandemic have changed the world. Before you maybe had a few in every area that just had to either go at it alone or join into some religious system. The Google doc I posted earlier has a ton of atheist zoom meetings and as I stated before I had a non religious discord server that gained over a hundred people in a few months of operating. There are a lot of us that have been beaten down in the pst by people trying to insist on bringing god into sobriety but it’s finally reaching a time when that is becoming less normal because we can find each other now through different forums and outlets like social media.
I love that!
I’m glad you all keep this thread going here. When I first got sober 8 months ago nothing like this was here. In fact some of the discussions I had here and in normal AA zoom meetings are what got me to create a discord channel and find secular sobriety groups.
You are totally fine @Compen! I try to be the best version of myself and it’s all I can do. I really appreciate you and what you have started with this thread
