Hey guys, anyone want to add shows with sobriety themes? For me, these are really great:
I loved Flaked ![]()
I lived down in Venice Beach for the Holidays one year.
How bout Loudermilk?
That one is really good!
Haven’t seen Single Drunk Female. Have to check it out.
I too would say Loudermilk is a great show
Also - Mom
Star Trek. Yes, Star Trek

Why? Not because of the synthehol (although that is a good wink to the problematic nature of drugs in general), but because of the attitude of aspiration to take the opportunity in each day, and make it an opportunity to be your best self.
The perfect lines to describe this are from the episode “The Neutral Zone”, from season 1 of The Next Generation, where Ralph - a finance executive who had preserved himself in a suspension chamber in outer space, hoping his heart condition would be cured and his millions of dollars would multiply exponentially and give him that much more material wealth in the future - is awakened by the crew of the Enterprise, over 300 years later, only to find that matter-energy replication technology has eliminated the need for money altogether, and has eliminated material poverty. He is left searching for a purpose for his life:
RALPH: Then what will happen to us? There’s no trace of my money. My office is gone. What will I do? How will I live? PICARD: This is the twenty fourth century. Material needs no longer exist. RALPH: Then what’s the challenge? PICARD: The challenge, Mister Offenhouse, is to improve yourself. To enrich yourself. Enjoy it.
For me, recovery is the same thing. I spent decades in my addiction chasing a goal that was always moving; I was trying to chase some imaginary perfection where I would be “better” than I was before. My sobriety has revealed to me that I was always enough, just by virtue of existing, and that the question was not what I didn’t have, but instead: what do I have today, and what is the next healthy challenge I can take on?
I think Star Trek is perfect for every life’s challenges. Aging, fear of the unknown and hoping one doesn’t transport in to your room while you are naked.
Oh my god i absolutely love these 2 programmes
I started Loudermilk. I liked it, but only watched the first episode and then abandoned. Does it keep getting better?
I thought so.
.I binged the series and found it a great series.
I’m not sure if this considered a sobriety series but I always liked the show rescue me. The lead actor Denis Leary who plays Tommy Gavin in the show is in and out of AA the whole entire show. There is many references to different sayings and he often is in meetings during the show. If I remember correctly the first episode is him throwing away a year chip because of whatever excuse at the time. There is drinking and other things in the show but if you read between the lines and really pay attention it shows the negative aspects of addiction in all of the characters. Especially Tommy gavin. The show is about a group of New York firefighters shortly after 911. It’s probably considered a comedy/drama. But during the Entirety of the show Tommy Gavin is fighting his demons and many times takes his will back Or tries to do things his way or control his drinking and it never works out it just creates a huge mess in his life and a lot of drama. There is a couple seasons where he goes to meetings and says somebody else’s name or makes up names and he doesn’t even say his name till eventually somebody calls him out in a meeting and he has to say who he really is lol. Also there is one episode where he goes to a meeting drunk and tells everybody that he likes drinking and he’s going to keep drinking and everybody’s looking at him like yeah I’m sure that’s totally working out … Good luck with that haha .. There’s also many Examples of him trying to find ways to pull off drinking like switching brands, new relationships, taking a break, only drinking during certain times or celebrations like it talks about in the big book. Rescue me is probably in my top 10 of all time. Though there is a lot of things about sobriety in the show and topics and references I don’t know if it would be considered a sobriety TV series. But I will always recommend this show because it shows the reality of alcoholism and its affects on family and friends and everything in life
What about movies? Just asking because always looking for something to watch.
Since someone asked about films. A Good Person is really great. It was written and directed by Zach Braff, if anyone recalls Garden State. It’s such an amazing film.
I second @JazzyS Mom is a great comedy. It actually reduced the stigma of aa meetings for me and made me less scared to start going.
Love the show!!
I forgot about Garden State!! That is such a good movie. If I remember correctly the soundtrack was pretty good too. I’m going to have to see about watching that soon or find which streaming service it’s on. I think it was directed by Zack also.
Beautiful boy was very relatable as far as the relationship with my family and some of the same manipulation tactics i pulled Or really everything related to addiction
Beautiful boy- Addiction/ family issues
Leaving Las Vegas- Realistic alcoholism
Candy - Realistic portrayal of opiate addiction
If I’m being honest the withdrawal scenes in leaving Las Vegas and candy are enough for me to not to go back to opiates or drinking. I need to be reminded about that daily

I thought this looked familiar but I haven’t watched it yet. It’s on Tubi and I have that. I really can’t believe how much great movies and shows are on Tubi and it’s free. I ended up Canceling Hulu because there was more options on Tubi and I have prime because of Amazon. So tubi and prime really is enough for now
Once again, Steve Carell did an excellent job in that show!
Another one I thought was good and more of a fun comedy is 28 days
Sandra Bullock and Steve Buscemi
Oh yeah that was definitely good. That’s very relatable especially if it’s your first time in rehab
My friend and I were just talking about how great Nick Cage was in Leaving Las Vegas. Brutal movie. Not for the faint at heart.
