Was asked to be speaker for a meeting this Sunday, I’ve never been before and only attended two speaker meetings. Would love some advice for making it easier with my anxiety.
I’d say go back and read some of your old posts. I’ve watched your sobriety journey on this forum. You have a great story.
I love speaker meetings! Usually they go thru what it was like, when you had enough, what you did to get sober, and what lifes like now that youre sober. Just share your experience strength and hope. Good luck @Suzrene
I’ve done only 2 myself. The best advice I can give you is to speak from your heart. No rehearsal and no notes needed. No one knows your story better than you. Keep an eye on the time. I personally like it when speakers spend more time in the solution. Everyone has war stories and it’s always good to hear a little about where they came from but some speakers spend too much time there and not enough time on the recovery part of their life. You have a great story to tell, especially the stuff you’ve survived sober, and I wish I was there to support you.
Lots of good ideas there. Before you start talking or walking up to the front take a few deep breaths to help calm any anxiety ….
Then when you start speaking just be yourself … you will do great and be fine.
I remember when I joined you were in your first year. It’s so nice to see you’re still around and doing so well. Even through such hardships. I think you’ve come so far in sober life and have a great story to share and inspire others. I wish I could attend
Public speaking is not my strong suit. I freeze and fumble my words. But, I think when you speak about yourself, and own life, it comes out naturally. No one knows your story better than you! I know my mind gets easily sidetracked to where I forget my original point. Maybe have a index card with a few points to help you stay in the right order and so you don’t forget anything you feel is worth mentioning.
Just breathe and remember that nothing you say could be wrong bc it’s your story. I wish you luck and hope to hear how it goes
Done loads over the years get the first one under your belt and youl be dying to do others , share what you were what you became and what youve become since you got sober ,wish you well.
Good luck today @Suzrene! You got this girl.
If you get nervous, picture your audience sitting their listening to you wearing only their underpants, it will lighten your mood and make you chuckle inside.
Please post an update. I would love to hear about your experience.
Phew!!! All that anxiety for no reason. I’m grateful for the opportunity to tell my story. It was almost therapeutic to go back and see all the wonderful things that happened in my sobriety, I concentrated on my recovery more than my life story. It was hard for the first two minutes but once I realized I was going to be ok then I just kept speaking from the heart and it just flowed naturally. I looked my my notes only a couple of times to keep on track of timeline. Grateful to share my story with my community.
So glad it went well! you inspired someone today!!! Be proud of your recovery and the difference you made by sharing your story!
Yay! So happy it went well! Getting that first one under your belt is such a relief.
