So I’m going in to speak at my first rehab next week and I’m not sure what to expect. I think the first part is just qualifying and telling a little about my story.
From there it turns into a panel discussion where the patients ask questions and what not. They didn’t do this at either rehab I was at so I want some input from the group. We just had regularly speakers come in.
- Has anyone been to a rehab where they did this?
- What information did you wish you had when you left rehab?
- Any other tips/suggestions from someone who has done this before?

When I was at rehab we had a panel come and share their experiences. I think the main thing is just to give to em straight. What was your experience as an addict and your process of transcending that condition. Personally, I was full up to my ears with recovery lingo, AA speak and the like, so it was a relief to hear those who just shared their unvarnished truth. Hope that helps and all the best !

It does. I will try not to speak in AA even though that is a big part of my story
Cool… I have nothing against AA mind you. It’s just when I was in treatment at times it got to be a bit much . I really value when people share their stories . It’s always an honor to listen to and usually something valuable to be learned.

Share what happened, what it was like, and what it is like now… Sit down and think of some key points in your story. Like how many times youve been to rehab, detoxs, iop, so they can relate. What tools you were given in rehab and how you put them to use today. Id also share that youre a member of AA so they know you work a program and youre having success. Maybe how working the steps in everyday life help you… And if you have suggestions on what not to do. I dont mean give them a check list. But like dont go to slippery places etc. Id also let them know how youve changed your people, places, and things up. I know that one was big for me anyways… Thats some things thats helped me in my recovery…
Hope this helps man and let us know how it goes!

How’d it go?? Or are you speaking tonight?
So I went into the rehab tonight and it was a blast. Ours was set up as a panel Q&A session with 6 other AA members. The guys there were very engaging and eager to get advice, which is better than I was doing in my first rehab. I got to give out my number to a few guys and steer then towards some groups they might like. There was one guy who called us liars and accused us all of being high. It was actually pretty amusing.

He was talking to me. On the top right of the post is the photo of the person he is replying to.
I got asked through AA, but you can always contact a rehab directly to inquire if they need mentors to come in and work one on one with patients too

Damn straight. There’s no rules about one sober person reaching out to help someone who is struggling.
You might be able to get some literature from AA or NA that is on topic. Also there are similar programs all over I’m sure you could reach out to.
Zombie thread arggghh
I’ve noticed that a lot of TSers have been asked to share their stories lately. I am bringing back this thread as a tool for everyone to share their experiences on … well sharing their experience in rehabs or at speaker meetings.
@MoCatt @Mephistopheles I believe you have both shared recently.
@C-sun if you ever come back
@SinceIAwoke
@Gabe.G
@BondJaneBond
Anyone else please feel free to add. If you have a speaking event coming up feel free to ask some questions.
