Sponsors for people who don’t go to meetings?

Do you find sponsors only by going to meetings? I’ve never been to a meeting because no one except my very close close friends know about my problem and I don’t want to make it known to my family, but I’ve heard and seen that sponsors are very beneficial. I’d rather be motivated and talked to by someone who’s been in my shoes.

During covid I met my sponsor on here, I’m now over 16 months sober and sponsor other people through this app. Pick someone in your time zone and with years of sobriety. Ask them if they have a sponsor and worked the program bc I’m noticing a lot of new comers thinking they can teach without any experience. Don’t feel bad if it doesn’t click bc a good sponsor won’t mind you getting a different one, all they want is for you to stay sober.

That is what this forum is all about, we’ve all been through or are going through it, and are here to help navigate sobriety.

A sponsor is someone you would get through the AA program. You can certainly go without anyone knowing, it is anonymous after all.

My next status is going to be finding my sponsor now lol thank you for the advice!! Connection with people really does make a big difference

I’m definitely going to attend at least one and feel it out, I’m shy talking about my life in person but hey I’ve done it in therapy so I’m willing to talk about it with people who are similar to me

Kinda repeating another reply I just made, lol, but I personally recommend seeking one locally. I’ve done the whole deal and have a hard time imagining not having a sponsor nearby now. The online site intherooms.com may also offer sponsorship if you really prefer it.

Also started this shared post which may have other insight:

I think it will be good for you. You don’t even need to share or even talk at a meeting. Heck, my first meeting, I didn’t say a word. But the thing is, while opening up is uncomfortable, that is where growth happens, when we are uncomfortable. And when we grow, change happens. And nothing changes, of nothing changes.

You can try out a 24hr AA meeting and listen on some meetings to get comfortable with what others share, if you dont really know what to expect.
