Saw those names and knew you had to be an Irishman! (my father/family is from Cork). I was born/grew up in the US though.

Shaq
Ken Griffey Jr (baseball)
Patrick Marleau (ice hockey)

I love football though (your football). Favorite sport, just not until I was 16 or 17. Three favorite footballers ever would probably be Keane, Zidane, Robben.

I no very little about American sport I’ve actually started watching a bit of the nba very good sport good to watch I watch the superbowl every year aswell. I was at a baseball game one time I was in sacremento it was the sacramento wild cats guys throwing balls at almost 100mph

Hurling and gaelic football are our main sports over here

NBA is good, it’s gotten better the last few years now that there is a bit of parity. Reminds me of the 90s when most teams had at least one really good player.

Baseball can be hit or miss (pun intended) for people. Some love it, and some don’t – the reason I usually hear is “boring” or “slow”. Personally I think it’s great, although I would watch football or hockey over it. Sacramento Wild Cats must be a minor league team. Minor league games are great because you can get so much closer and the guys have something to prove, much like lower-tier football.

I’ve been to a few hurling matches in Cork, never Gaelic football but have watched that on TV.

Love all sport but to me nothing compares to hurling one of the fastest and toughest games on the planet

By far the most technically gifted person I ever saw play football died today. Only 60 year old, died of heart failure. Lived for years on cocaine, champagne and cigars. All in huge excess. Rest in peace Diego Armando Maradona. Another icon of my youth gone too soon.

He certainly packed a lot into those 60 years. Unfortunately years of hard living usually means less years total.
Even when I was really young and hadn’t fallen in love with the game yet (that came around age 10 or so), I remember my Dad always talking about Maradona. To this day he speaks of him as this almost mythical figure, godly. A true giant of football.
I remember the day Cruyff died, and I will remember the day Maradona died.

It’s tough picking only three. Off the top of my head I would pick:
Bobby Orr - arguably the best hockey player ever.
Steve Prefontaine - one heck of a distance runner.
Michael Phelps because he accomplished so much - a truly outstanding athlete.
Notable mention Rob Ray - he played hockey in my hometown Buffalo N.Y. he was more known for his fisticuffs on the ice but, in person he is one of the nicest individuals I have ever met!
