Starting Life over

My name is Lyndsey and I am working on 4 months sober I have never believed in myself more than I do now. I know that there is a way to live without drowning everything out now. I have committed to a 1 year program in Baltimore city MD and I know I need this time for myself. My question is how do you support yourself financially when you can’t work. I don’t have much support here because my family is in North Carolina.

Do they allow people in the program to work?

Congratulations on ur sobriety! And way to go on entering a 1 year program. I dont have much advice on the financial help of things other than that I would imagine there would be supports/resources out there. Perhaps a counsellor or someone from the program could direct you on the right path for financial support

When I first got sober I had no income for 6 months. I also had no family support.

I received food stamps, and rental assistance to live in a sober living facility. I also had a small amount of cash assistance. I live in NY so we have a decent public benefit’s system. I ate a soup kitchens a lot, went to food pantries. I also was in AA and went to a lot of events.

It’s very doable if you don’t mind making some sacrifices and being humble enough to utilize the supports in place!

Thanks everyone. This is a spiritual Christ based program and we cannot work for up to 7 months. They use our cash assistance and food stamps to pay our rent. I was thinking since I’ve made it through my 60 day blackout that maybe I could walk dogs in the evenings, or even make earrings and bracelet’s to sell. I don’t need much but it would be nice to have something in my pocket for a coffee or an egg roll once in a while.
