Starting over/getting back up

So, I am officially sober once again and intend to be permanently abstinent this time. A few years back I had some considerable amount of time sober but a live in girlfriend caused me to have a nervous breakdown After we broke up and I stayed drunk and stoned on weed and attempted suicide and nearly succeeded. They didn’t expect me to survive and I spend a month in ICU and another two months confined to bed at home. I struggle with mental illness, trauma, and grew up around substance abuse and I think those things as well as other factors have contributed to my alcohol and drug problems. The drugs have always been easy to put down but alcohol is a different story and once I get started drinking I can’t stop. I’ve been feeling empty, miserable, and depressed. There is no longer AA meetings in town so I’m going to find a Zoom meeting to attend and a sponsor and get back to doing Step work. I’m glad to be back and feel hopeful for the future.

Welcome @Rollo. I’m sorry to hear what brought you here but I am so glad you are! I only have one local meeting a week so do online mostly at www.intherooms.com

With the help of this community and AA, I am 23 days sober today, something I never believed possible, even with previous long stretches of sobriety. Every relapse seems worse and I don’t think I have another recovery in me. Now I know there is hope for a future. Hope for your future too.

Good to see you. Keep coming back.

Welcome Matt!
So glad you found us.
This forum has been an excellent tool in my sober toolbox.
I work the AA program but there are many others out there if you’re interested in the in person setting. SMART and Recovery Dharma seem to be popular too. Maybe check in your area.

But if you decide the AA route is for you, I recommend a couple apps.

  1. Everything AA - the app contains a lot of literature and access to online meetings.
  2. Meeting Guide - app is blue with a white folding chair. Possibly new meetings have opened up in your area that you’re not aware of.

Here’s a link to a platform that has all kinds of online meetings. I personally prefer in person meetings but this is my go to for AA online. 70 meetings a week and marathon meetings on holidays.

Sounds good! Sounds like you know what you want and what you’re gonna do to start. That’s a good place to be for now.

Did you make it to a meeting today? How was it?

Hope you have a great day today Matt @Rollo
