Sugar hangovers really?

Does anyone feel like they have a hangover if they went a little too far with the junk food the night before? 21 days sober today :grinning:

Lol almost everytime. I’ll do good all day but right before bed I’ll eat some bs food and wake up feeling like crap.

What you eat physically and mentally affects you. That is why even if you feel like just eating complete junk early on in recovery it is very important to try to get the good stuff too and aim to switch to a better diet completely.

I attempted to cut out sugar a few weeks ago, and my advice would be to wait until a year of sobriety. My body was craving something so bad, my impulse control was affected and it left me in a dangerous state. Thankfully I didn’t drink, but I was pretty unstable for a while there. If anyone else has any experience with this, I would love some input. I really want to quit sugar but not in exchange for my sobriety.

I think treats here and there are fine imo, but yeah definitely better to have them earlier in the day If you do and surround it with lots of healthy stuff  also three weeks is great :tada:

ha, I get these, and I always think how great they are compared to booze hangovers. I’d take them over that any day!

I think that’s a good idea to start getting healthy, but feel free to splurge every once in a while. It’s all about finding that balance! @Brittney_Garretson

Omg I think I have a caffeine hangover today, I’ve felt lethargic all day and I was walking around shopping for about 10 hours yesterday, but between each store we stopped for coffee and I was drinking caffeinated sodas while I was walking as well. Now I’m craving pizza as if I have an actual hangover!

You are right, it is different for everyone and we all have to figure out what’s best for ourselves. I’m the opposite of you…around 3 weeks sober I absolutely HAD to give up coffee (and most caffeine…I have a soda or chocolate as a treat here and there) bc I was an anxious, aggressive mood swingin’ mess! I would get so angry at the stupidest shit and I couldn’t let it go. I honestly felt it physically and it was awful. I felt out of control. Life without it has been SO much easier for me. Crazy how that works.

To be fair I could go for pizza every morning :joy::wink:

@Oliverjava yeah I had to have some tea here and there to start and taper down. I had really turned into a monster one day and hurt my husband’s feelings so that made it easier to quit as well :frowning: don’t get me wrong I take responsibility as obviously I’m dealing with some deeper issues but I really could feel it physically, that caffeine was exacerbating all I’m going through.

also sidenote I was just reading through and borrowing some stuff in my journal from the list you sent me, thanks again

I had one today after eating a bunch if sesame chicken and white rice before bed. Also woke up stupidly thirsty and with a little bit of a headache. If alcohol isn’t worth that feeling than crappy Chinese food isn’t either.

I’ve had sugar hangovers worse than actual hangovers. Dehyradration comes in all shapes and sizes. If you’re eating junk food at night make sure you have a couple of glasses of water to aid digestion and to keep hydrated.

Very well done on the 21 days. Not far off 30 now! Very well done :kissing_closed_eyes:

Oh mate. Tell me about it. I spend a lot of time out with my friends who still do the club thing and in order to keep up, I rely on energy drinks, coffee and caffeine tablets. Caffeine hangovers are real things and they suck.

Yep, they’re a thing! I’ve had a wicked ice cream hangover nearly everyday of sobriety. At least I remember eating it the night before though!
I’ve switched to drinks and sweets with Stevia sweetener now which helps the cravings without the sugar hangover.
