You lost me at, Oprah Winfrey. Sorry my friend. If living ONLY in the Now was possible, we’d lose our frame of reference.
What do you mean by frame of reference? Time? Ask yourself what can u change about your past? What does lingering in the past do for you? I understand that u might be apprehended about the whole concept but before you write off completely just check it out. I was the same way before I read it. It is just one of many tools out there to help us grow. God, Buddha, allah whatever is your higher power that give you inspiration to continue on the sober path.
Thank you for recommending this book, as it was recently gifted to me. Definitely on my list of books to read, This next while .
Butch, we are for better or worse products of our past. I do agree with you the only reality available to us is a moment in time or the NOW. The past is unreliable due to the many obvious factors germane to the nature of ourselves e.g. distorted recollections of past. However, I do feel our past has shaped us into who we are today. It is possible to change our outlook going forward but it takes a herculean effort to be successful. Many of us just aren’t up to the task. As far as my Higher Power is concerned, it’s there when needed. Otherwise our partnership operates under the old adage, “Physician, heal thyself.”
i’m going to buy this asap
You are right. Every good or dad decision has shaped and molded you into the person you are today. With without trials and triumphs you could grow. With trying to stay in the now is to basically put all of your past thoughts in a file cabinet and access them when needed but don’t focus solely on them. Plan for the future but do not dwell there. I see life as a balancing act. Life needs balance. Too much of one thing can topple things over. We all can pribably agree with that I’m wringing this on a sobriety page. Find a balance in life focus on what is in you life not what was or will be. I love this conversation keep it going.
I love it. Thx for sharing. Buddha has a lot of great insights.
I’ll go one better. Time was created by man to keep track of all MOMENTS. I feel it to be a useful tool as well as a framework to perceive our place in the world or a frame of reference as I mentioned in a previous post. Going deeper into the rabbit hole, some have made a case for “Simultaneous Time.” The theory that all time, past, present, and future, are occurring at the same MOMENT.
I have found that since being sober I am naturally living more in the moment. For example, I used to jump into relationships, drunkenly, thinking it would make solve my problems, and then wonder why it didn’t last. Now I’m more aware of being happy where I am. I’m also less impatient with people and am able to meet them where they are at that time.
You took the words right out of my mouth! I’m more focused on being in the moment of where I am; more patient; anddddd not even trying to entertain the company of anyone because I truly need to focus on myself. One day at a time right?
For instance, “If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him.”
Enlightenment is a journey not a destination such as life. John said life is what happen when your busy making other plans. We get so wrapped up in what we did and what we want to be that we forget to just who we are. We are not the past and we are not the future. I could dwell and get wrapped up in the past but at what end. The future is unpredictable. Your mind vision of the future is a projection of how u handled things in the past shown in future senerios. Irish hammer if you see Buddha on the street kill him? Why? What good would it bring to your life? What has anger and recentment given but more of the same? Ask yourself in the moment what are you feeling inside right now? I wish u the best on your journey.
What time is it?
The time is now.
Butch, Google the passage and it’s essence will become clear to you.
I just googled it I have to read more into it but that is interesting. Thanks for clarifying lol.
Many thanks my friends.
