I saw some live concert footage of Moz doing this song. His fans were rushing the stage, grabbing onto him, kissing him, etc. All these boquets of gladiolus being hurled at him. It was nuts!
Probably my all-time favorite band.
Also Mozzer’s solo stuff up to and including “You are the Quarry”.
Have been in place to see Moz 4x, actually seen him just once. He cancelled twice (as he does) and I cancelled once. The time I did see him was when I drove from Boston to Brooklyn and saw him at the gorgeous King’s Theatre.
I had to leave during “Meat is Murder” though. I get it, but I’m also not interested in watching animals be slaughtered on a massive screen for 8 minutes.
Man, what an experience! What a beautiful theatre, too. Thank you for posting these pics. Moz has played in my town on a few occasions. Would have liked to have gone but his ticket prices are a little too steep for my budget. Oh, well. I’ll always have his records to enjoy at home.
I liked his solo stuff up until “Southpaw Grammar”. Pretty decent record overall, and the tracks “Boy Racer” and “Do Your Best and Don’t Worry” really rock, but the cover art sucked, and there was no lyric booklet included with it. Very minimalistic.
I constantly struggle with which studio album by The Smiths is the best of them. Depends on the day. Incredible when a band doesn’t really have any bad songs (lets pretend “Golden Lights” never happened), let alone no bad albums.
I really wish we could’ve seen what an album after “Strangeways Here We Come” would’ve sounded like. It was such a change in direction, a leap forward, but still very much The Smiths.
I think that Viva Hate is pretty close to what we would’ve gotten, it has stylistic similarities.
I’m also a musocian for 20+ years, and enjoy covering Smiths tunes.
I do a good one of “Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before”, particularly.
Wow! Id love to hear it. Do you play a 12-string?
Even though this isn’t a studio album technically, I’ve always really liked “Hatful of Hollow”, their John Peele BBC recordings.
I used to have one, but almost never used it because things like keeping it in tune and restringing it were a fucking nuisance. Sold it 10 yrs back or so when I offloaded several guitars I didn’t use much.
Agreed. Def the best of their multiple compilation albums. It’s a great one for when you’re in a Smiths mood but not sure what you want from them.
Yes, they sound so beautiful but seem like a lot of work…especially tuning 'em. I guess you could always just play through a chorus box to get sort of the same effect.
More or less what I do. I also play a telecaster over a Rickenbacker, although I’d love to have one someday since two heavy influences on my musicianship play them (Johnny Marr, Peter Buck).
I mostly play my acoustic though, which is an Ovation.
Yeah, Rickys are great. Always loved their look and sound.
Ha! Love it. Uptempo songs, jangly guitars…but dark lyrics. I always liked that contrast.
Frankly Mister Shankly!
I spent a lotta grade 10-11ish time pondering those lyrics…
I want to live and I want to love
I want to catch something that I might be ashamed of
Frankly, Mr. Shankly, this position I’ve held
It pays my way and it corrodes my soul
Oh, I didn’t realize that you wrote poetry
I didn’t realize you wrote such bloody awful poetry, Mr. Shankly
Frankly, Mr. Shankly, since you ask
You are a flatulent pain in the ass…
Tried to get a convincing Alma Matters on my lovely Yamaha piano this weekend. Sounds so maudlin. I guess I’m the only one who can brighten it up, even with my friends around. But heaven knows I’m miserable now.
OMG now there’s another crap video. Dim all but the sound if you are given the choice.
Right about the video. Probably the worst hair style Moz has ever had. Holy cow. I used to do a pretty decent version of "Every Day is Like Sunday ", but I haven’t practiced it in a while. Definitely another one to add to my “pop” repitoir.
Oh man! I started listening to them about 26 years ago! Love the Smiths and Morresey! A group of guys that I knew at the time listened to them a lot. That’s how I learned about them.
For me it all started in 1986 when “The Queen is Dead” came out. Probably the saddest music I had ever heard at the time, but I loved it. It was such a refreshing contrast to the perky Pop drivel on Top 40 radio at the time.
Running a 30k tomorrow. Can’t sleep. Listening to: “Irish blood, English heart”. This, I’m made of. The Oregon Coast Range rn, not sure.
