Tips for dealing with meth withdrawal

Hi everyone.

I have recently quit meth which I used for a very short period of time and a 15 year cannabis addiction. I am generally feeling good, the first week was pure hell but I do feel I’m over the worst of it, I seemed to have manged to not experience any real cravings from meth despite a pretty nasty withdrawal in every other sense. And recently have had my cravings for cannabis taper off.

I do seem to be having an issue with pretty constant body spasms/ twitching, I ended up seeing the doctor about it and they gave me some lorazepams to help settle it when it’s bad, but obviously a very small script as they know I’m an addict in recovery, I am really worried it may be a sign of some significant damage as it doesn’t seem to be going away and I am almost 30 days clean from meth, I would have thought once the drug had left my system this would stop, I was on setraline and under the impression it may be serotonin syndrome so I have stopped taking them about 5 days ago but again no sign of improvement. I am however clenching my teeth a lot as well.

Am I giving it to much thought? Is this just a result of quitting multiple drugs? Or is it possible something more serious is going on. It’s quite frustrating because apart from these symptoms I’m actually starting to really enjoy sobriety. I was hoping someone may have had a similar experience and maybe able to give me abit of reassurance this will pass in time, or do I need to be pushing at my doctor more that something is truly wrong?

T.i.a and I really do only want to hear from people who have experience with meth, I know a lot of addicts of other drugs on this platform like to take an attitude ‘addiction is addiction’ and proceed to go on about things that have helped them with alcohol etc. I have stopped using other drugs in the past and I promise you this is a different beast, and I really want advice from people who actually might have had a similar experience with meth itself, not anything else.

Hi Dan, welcome to Talking Sober  You may find it helpful to search terms like “meth”, “twitch”, “spasm”, “meth withdrawal” (you can search them individually or in combination) - search them by tapping the magnifying glass icon - and that will bring up some threads from former meth users.

Hope you find your way past this soon. Look forward to seeing you around :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi Dan! Welcome to the forum! Congratulations on ur upcoming 30 days clean!!!

I used meth for 3 years (amongst other drugs but at that time meth was my DOC). When i quit using meth i did experience alot of side effects which lasted for a good 9 months id say. One of those side effects was twitching (which actually lasted longer than 9 months). Id get twitches in my face. It was the same spot that kept twitching and like urself, i honestly thought i did permanent nerve damage. I have been off of meth for over 10 years and i no longer have that twitch in my face. So i do believe that the body does heal itself. I do still have nerve sensitivity on my legs tho. That was another side effect i experienced that is still with me. A simple tap on my legs hurts… and im positive that its bcuz of meth bcuz when i quit, thats when i really noticed a difference with my pain tolerance on my legs. I dont experience paranoia anymore. I dont see or hear things anymore. Im not on “autopilot” anymore. Overall most things healed itself but it did take time (for me anyway). I was put on a boatload of meds when quitting and im no longer on any of those meds. I was just on them to help with the withdrawl and the side effects from meth use.

Super proud of u for quitting. Its one of the harder drugs to quit but its definitly not impossible  Hope u stick around!
