Feeling a bit more anxious than usual today. I did have a cup of coffee this morning with breakfast. I have not had much anxiety since becoming sober. I thought reaching out and communicating with this community would help. I am thinking about going for a drive to focus on the scenory rather than my anxiety. What do you do to help decrease your anxiety?
Coffee can sometimes mimic anxiety symptoms for me so I try to do mostly decaf, or caf/decaf blend. But sometimes it’s just anxiety
Taking a walk I find can help with anxiety, or any type of physical activity. Watching a funny show, playing word games, journaling… Or breathing exercises are great for anxiety too
This is a neat gif
I really should do a decaf/regular blend lol. I like having a little energy from caffiene, but i never know if it will trigger me to experience similar symptoms to anxiety. Its not as hightened as earlier…
I get a lot of anxiety if I have too much coffee for sure.
I don’t like to recommend supplements necessarily because I’m not a doctor, but I have found taking L theanine really helps. It’s a natural amino acid found in green tea which is why when you drink green tea even though it has caffeine you don’t get the jitters like you do with coffee. I have used it as a supplement in tablets before and it has been really helpful.
I second what @Salty said, too much caffeine always amplifies my anxiety so I try to limit my intake. Don’t let it freak you out, a drive sounds like a good idea for a distraction!
The best thing for anxiety is nature. Disconnect from everything that causes anxiety and reconnect with the land we come from. We are animals after all and were not meant to do most of things we do.
I use the 5-4-3-2-1 tool.
List 5 things you can see. (IE…see the comp, my d-o-g thats his name ,tv, clock and my water bottle)
list 4 things you cab touch (IE I can touch the couch. the book i’m reading, pen, my hair)
list 3 things you can hear. (IE…the fan blowing on high, a ,car that drove by, d-o-g talking to me)
List 2 things I am Grateful for (I woke up sober, My shower,)
List 1 positive affirmation about my self. I am A Good cook.
Repeat this as many times it takes for the anxiety to leave. Using different answers each time
Everyone has a bit of anxiety, so you are not alone. Just try not to overthink things because most things causing your anxiety are not really that important in the big picture. Your happiness is what matters, focus on this.
My body can’t tell the difference between coffee and anxiety once my heart starts racing either. I wear an analog wristwatch my Gramma gave me that audibly ticks, so when I start spiriling I focus on the ticking and box/belly breathe.
