Heya!
Has anyone tried transcendental meditation? I read some books about it, but of course in all of them the author says you need to pay for a course to start with TM, which is just bullshit, because it’s supposed to be a really easy technique.
I’m really bad at meditation (have tried guided and mindfullnes meditation, but couldn’t keep up with, because I felt it was such a draining mental effort it left me exhausted and angry), but I would like to try TM before I give up.
Any other suggestions are welcome!
Thank you for such a long and thoughtful reply. Not a lot of people have heard of TM and I suppose people who have experience with it are probably really rich, since it’s absurdly expensive. Meh. Maybe it’s just another guru hoax or whatever.
I guess I will try once again with mindfullnes meditation and guided ones.
Thanks again for your advice and suggestions!
My ex was very keen on TM and of course meditation was to an extent brought to the awareness of a worldwide audience because of the Beatles travelling to meet the Maharishi Yogi in 1968 to study TM.
Here’s a list of (let’s be honest, basically well-off) people who use TM:

One of the reasons given for charging a cost to learn TM is that we live in a society ruled by money and are conditioned to only respect things (and it could be argued people) with a monetary worth. Therefore, if TM was taught freely (to a society that values money virtually above everything else) it would be regarded as throwaway.
I seem to remember that at one point the cost of learning was tied in with a percentage of what the person earned or was worth (in order that they took it seriously).
And, because of this philosophy I think the poorest (in India) are, or were taught for free.
I have used TM. Not because I’m wealthy or well-off! If only.
I used it for around a year and it’s very straightforward. And yes, 20 to 30 minutes, twice a day. Certainly when starting out.
It really helped me, and reduced my intake of booze and my worries (at the time).
There’s no ‘hocus-pocus’ involved and it didn’t clash with my religious beliefs.
That’s about all I can tell you! Hope it sheds a bit of light.
And as I’m here, I’d like to say you’re doing an amazing thing, bringing meditation to, or at least ‘planting the seeds’ with the whole community @Oliverjava. Fantastic job!
The cost of TM course in my country is more than my monthly income. Even if they gave me a 50 % discount I wouldnt be able to afford it, unless i stopped going to therapy or eating haha. I just thought maybe there’s a way I could learn it for free, but whatever. I’m just frustrated because I’m in a bad financial situation and I save all my money for therapy and food.
Sometimes it feels like if you’re poor you just simply don’t have access to things that might really improve your quality of life and that’s just the way it is … Eh.
Google Russell Brand, he talks loads about TM on You Tube. You don’t need to be to do it. Just practise.
I meant rich.
Any luck with the meditation?
My 65 year old step dad swears by TM. Picked it up when he was in college and recently started doing it regularly again to help him not smoke. He’s been smoke free for 1 year now.
