Transitioning Back Into The Wider Community

Hi everyone.
I have just completed 8 months in a rehab and have moved into transitional housing as of yesterday. I spent the last 34 years of my life in a quiet country town and since leaving rehab I moved the city which is not something I’m used to. It’s really overwhelming all the hustle and bustle but I’m becoming used to it slowly. I’m open for any advice or tips from anyone who can assist on how to make my transition easier. Thankyou

Welcome @Bree6281 and im glad you found us

Congrats on graduating rehab! The recovery work doesnt end.

I would recommend you find a regular support group, an accountability buddy/sponsor, and double down on your efforts. In these threads ive read people lose sobriety after they lose the structure of rehab but you can create that for yourself!

Read around lots and check in often

Congratulations!
I echo finding some support groups.
Also maybe find some green spaces in the city that you can go to to recharge.
Keep us posted!

Thankyou. I have a sponsor and am doing the 90 meetings in 90 days so I’m hoping that will add some structure into my life, also planning on attending some recovery groups I’m just hoping I’m not taking on too much. Boredom is a big trigger for me so I like to keep myself busy

Good for you! Play it by ear and talk with your sponsor. I get the boredom as a trigger as thats one of mine too. One day at a time. Try not to borrow worry from tomorrow. Just take the next right step for your recovery

Welcome to the forum, @Bree6281 and congratulations on your 8 months! :tada:

I don’t know if you like photography, but I have found that walking the streets off the main beat and capturing small details of daily life can really help get to know a city’s actual heartbeat. It will hopefully also show you that, overwhelming as they are, cities are just a collection of individual people’s (and animals) lifes in all their beauty.

Hope that helps :camera_flash:

Big towns are just a lot of small neighborhoods pushed together. You’ll recognize this once you become more acquainted with your surroundings. Also, big cities tend to have great parks and hikes along rivers or in the surrounding hills. Check out the history of the neighborhood you’re living in. It will change your feeling of the place. All cities had an interesting past.
