Upcoming vacation and drinking

I love your post!!!

Ha thanks Julia. I mean, what’s up with the youth these days. Talk about short attention span.:joy::joy::joy::joy:

:joy::joy::+1:
Hahahaha

Try thinking about what you will be able to do sober, rather than what you will be ‘missing’.

Although maybe you should think a bit about what you’ll be missing - my guess is some combination of blackouts, embarrassment, shame, regret, anxiety…?

Yeah I know what you mean I’m just so use to travel and drink being associated together but you are right you dont remember half the holiday I could imagine I’m gonna have an amazing time being a sober alcoholic but I really want to push to my 6 months :muscle:

Right before i went sober we booked our Summer vacation. So called “all-inclusive” package, meaning 24 hours of free drinks. The travel Agent promoted the hotel by saying that they are serving the “good stuff” and not some cheap fake booze. So back in January i thought that this will be the latest when i will start drinking again, maybe just to get the most for the money spent. But, 5 months later i am confident that i will not start again and just order some NA drinks

I did a sober long weekend trip to New York. It was amazing. I had energy to stay up and dance late every night, arrive early for more dance classes at 10:00 am and then cram in some time at the museum and central park before I left.

I have also done sober weekends at the lake where late night binging is replaced with late night walks and taking out the telescope to wonder at the sky. I still sing along with the guitar around the campfire too.

I posted a couple of days ago that I allow myself a few near beers up at the lake. Sure they are a trigger but they are light and healthy compared to the alternative. I am sure you can get something nice to drink in your hand for the vacation that won’t reset your addiction.

Being that this is a sobriety forum, not a reduction/moderation board, I don’t anticipate that you’ll get anybody to agree with you. I like that folks are sharing their personal experience with this.

This is a great place to hang out our kooky thoughts and wonderings. There are so many nutty things I’ve seen here that I can readily recall thinking and doing my own self. The thought of a dispensation to drink for a day or a week is one. A sponsor one asked me “If you were allowed to drink for one day each year, wouldn’t you waste all the other days in the year planning for it and dreaming about it and obsessing over it?” He was right, for me, anyway.

Blessings on your house .

I also wonder if having a thought like “I’ll quit again when I get home” night make someone drink even harder to make sure they get all the drinking in that they can while they can. I know that’s what I would do!!!

I have a huge family reunion 4th of July week and my brothers are all talking about how nice it will be to have some beers together. I am seeing that as my first big test and strategizing already. I can tell you I know for myself I would for sure rev instead of taper if I allowed myself to drink. Keep up the streak, you are at 149 which is so great!!! I want to see your 6 Month Sober announcement!

100%!! I also binge eat right before a “diet”. Same concept. Like I know I am saying goodbye so let me go out with a bang!!

Going to the shore for a week. I do like being able to drive at any time now that I’m not drinking. The shore does seem more wide open because I won’t be confined to walk around the beach because I started boozing at 2. Last year was rough. Always hung over and if we went somewhere I was cranky thinking about when I could get a drink.

That freedom is brilliant isn’t it! Can you plan a few places to drive to,help keep you focused on the positives of being sober on holiday?

This question comes up every few months. I remember @surfinbird got nailed for these same questions about drinking at her wedding a couple of years ago. I was one of the prime respondents and I regret to this day being so harsh in my ‘opinion’. Thankfully, I have learned a lot since then, including being more tender with newbies who are just spreading their new sober wings.

Forward about a year later and @Heddy got the same overreactive treatment (tho not from me) when expressing her desire to drink on holiday.

These 2 instances stick out, tho many others have asked the same or close. Basically, we all want to find that magical way we can drink just for those special occasions. Be like normal drinkers and then back to sober.

Sadly, it doesn’t work that way for most of us. A week of vacation turns into months or years or perhaps we get into a big fight or 2 or 3 during that week or drive drunk or who can say. We all know this story and how it ends…not well. Otherwise we wouldn’t be hanging out on a sobriety forum.

I have been on a few vacations since getting sober, including all inclusives with high end liquor and a beautiful wine bar I used to love. It wasn’t easy at first, but is easier now. And I have NEVER regretted waking up clear headed, rested, focused and regret and hangover free. Do I wish I could drink? Sometimes, yes. Mostly no.

You can, of course, drink on your vacation if you want to. The choice is 100% yours. Only you know in your heart of hearts if you have a problem with alcohol and only you know if this is a wise decision for you.

Please let us know what you decide and how it goes. I wish you a very happy and relaxing vacation.

And super huge props on your 149 days!
