Visiting a friend who is a heavy drinker

Yesterday I went to visit a friend of mine who is a functioning alcoholic. I had to drive 2 hours through snow storm conditions to get there and when I arrived I was stressed to the max and definitely craving a beer. She started drinking as soon as I got there but I didn’t give in. I see it is possible for me to be around drinkers and not drink, which was something I was really worried about my ability to do. Anyway I’m happy to report I woke up feeling good and not hungover after a night with my heaviest drinker friend. Yay!

That is so awesome! Way to go! Hoping I have that kind of willpower when I go visit/stay with my family in December. They all drink heavily, and I would always do it with them. Tomorrow is day 10 for me.

Sounds like a really risky situation. I know when I was in early sobriety I avoided risk at all costs.

Congrats!! As long as she respects your sobriety and tries to help you thats a big win.

My friends have been all very supportive with me saying I’m no longer drinking, don’t offer me a drink. No guilting or peer pressure. I was / am worried about being in a social setting and feeling lured to drink due to environment but I think if I feel like that I will just remove myself from the situation and try again later.
