I’m thinking seriously about volunteering at my local Humane Society animal shelter. I looked into it, and I would only have to commit to 2+ visits a month for a 3, 6 or 12 month period. Commiting to just 6 visits over the course of 3 months would be perfect for me to get the feel of how I like doing it, how well it’ll fit into the rest of my life, etc. I LOVE animals, and it would feel so good to be giving to such a good cause without expecting anything in return. I’ve gotten busier since getting sober, but I still have a lot of free time, and it feels like something is missing. My friend mentioned how much she loved volunteering for them, and I thought, that’s it! I would love volunteering, and I could make that minimum commitment, but put in more time if it works out well.
We had this beautiful guy for three days back in January. We fell utterly in love with him, but unfortunately there were some behaviors around my children that made us a bit nervous We had him for so short a time, but I still think about him and miss him so much. I carry his tag around with me in my purse. We’re looking into getting a smaller dog soon.
@ErinLeigh Hi! How are you? I think that’s an amazing idea! I love animals too. Had a lot of rescued cats of the past years. Cats are my favorite. Helping animals in need can be so rewarding. It’s truly wonderful you are considering giving some of your time to animals who need it.
I volunteer a bunch with horses and kids like 15 hours a week. It’s been so good for me and I joke with other adults out there that “it’s cheaper than therapy”… even though it has been just as helpful in a few ways. I say try it out and see how it goes, I love the connection I make with the people and animals.
Volunteering at a shelter is such a nice thing to do, I used to walk dogs at a shelter, and it’s very gratifying! You’ve just given me an idea, I could do that again, it’s been a while!
I volunteer at a women’s shelter and I feel like it really helps with my recovery. I see women all the time that have known me and my struggles and they see where I am now. It inspires them and it keeps me going. Giving your time to help your community is just a good feeling in general. Pets def help lift your spirits❤️
Thanks @ErinLeigh, you’ve got me thinking now! I love both cats and dogs but cannot really have any pets at the moment because it’s just me looking after them and I am sometimes away from home for days or even weeks on end. Maybe volunteering at the local rescue center can help fill the void
