Hello community,
I’ll be doing some maintenance on Talking Sober this weekend.
We’re migrating to new infrastructure (not just upgrading the current). It’s a more complex operation than usual, so there will be some downtime required.
Later today I will put Talking Sober into read-only mode. That means no new posts or messages can be made, but you can still view and browse. I will then transfer all of Talking Sober to the new infrastructure. Once the transfer is complete and I have verified that everything is running smoothly, I will change the DNS settings so that talkingsober.com now points to that new infrastructure. I’ll remove read-only from the new instance while the old instance will remain read-only.
What to expect:
- During maintenance the site will be intermittently unavailable
- It will eventually go into read-only as explained above
- Your internet provider should pick up the new instance in about an hour and will then start directing you to it. You will know you’re on the new one if it’s not read-only anymore. You can refresh your page throughout the day to check
- Everything should operate as usual on the new instance and there’s nothing you should do
- You should remain logged in, but if you are logged out for whatever reason, just log back in
Why the migration:
- We’re moving the physical location of the server hosting Talking Sober. It’s currently in Canada. Most of our users are in the US so the server is also moving to the US.
- Being physically closer to the server will mean less latency, slightly faster load times and a more responsive site
- I wanted to upgrade the server’s resources anyway, so I might as well do both at the same time. The system’s memory is improving by about 50%, so things should be snappier even during high traffic times.
