Went to ER.. got a script for librium

Basically long story short I went to the ER with anxiety. It was a very excruciating experience… I was having one of my worst episodes ever, and it took so long for them to give me a shot to calm my ass, but it finally came a long with a vitamin liquid back. I wish the shot kicked in a little shorter, but I’d say I started feeling relief in like 20 minutes. Chatted with the nurse… let her know I’m a crazy psycho, then got prescribed something called Librium? Has anyone used it

My plan is to not abuse the drug, and I’ve also been told you can’t mix it with alcohol or you get super sick

At this point I just want a happy pill that I know works when I will need it the most or experiencing the most

This is one of the worst detoxes I’ve ever had… and I’m not sure it would have been without reaching out today

Thanks. Does your sobriety plan consistent or any drugs? How do you feel about them

hi @JeffreyDale i was prescribed librium when i first tried to quit alcohol…it helps with anxiety and withdrawal symptoms…my doctor also told me to taper down my alcohol at the same time! it almost killed me! i took the librium and also the alcohol as directed…i was eating my dinner and the tablets and alcohol kicked in really quickly…i could not swallow and nearly choked to death… ambulance came and with quick thinking of my wife i was ok…i will never take that medication again…it is very strong and only meant for very short term usage…1 week max…use it with caution…and don’t drink with it either… doctors do get things wrong! good luck

Thanks for your input. The actual stuff I got is called chlordiazepoxide HCI 25MG, not sure if that makes a difference.

My doctor told me no alcohol whatsoever with this medication though.

What do you mean you were choking though? I definitely dont plan on mixing, but now I’m curious what actually happens physically if you do. Whatever it is, it doesn’t sound fun at all.

I’ve used other benzodiazepines, but not Librium itself. It will help you feel more calm, but yes you cannot mix it with alcohol (in severe cases you can stop breathing!), and you can form a dependence if you take it frequently for too long, or not as prescribed.

Stick to the prescription, and anticipate not using it forever. Is the prescription to use “as needed” for anxiety, or on a schedule to help with detoxing in general? If your use is very occasional and properly dosed, you may not have issues with building up tolerance to the effects.

If you’re into the brain chemistry side of things, both alcohol and Librium increase the effect of the GABA neurotransmitter, which is responsible for the calming effects on the body and the anxiety reduction you experience with them. Regular alcohol or benzodiazepine use makes your body less sensitive to GABA to keep functioning normally. When you’re detoxing, you now have low sensitivity to GABA and no alcohol to boost the effect back up, so you get agitated and anxious. As you detox, the absence of alcohol or benzodiazepines will cause your body to readjust its GABA sensitivity back towards normal. Withdrawal symptoms and anxiety will decrease accordingly.

So because of all that, you may find that (a) you feel less of a need to take the Librium for your anxiety as the detox passes, and (b) taking significant amounts of Librium may make detox take longer.

The reaction between Librium and alcohol is based on them both acting on GABA in interacting ways. The effect is both stronger than and different from the individual effects alone. You can get drowsiness, low blood pressure, slurred speech, respiratory depression, loss of coordination, among other things.

My doctor put me on clonazepam and naltrexone. I’ve never felt better! Hang in there, I’ve been there! Panic attacks are scary but you will get through this. The librium will help with the detox but it sounds like you need something for anxiety as well. Talk with your doctor. Hang in there, it gets better!

all I know was that it was called librium…the choking happened because i started to relax/float in out of consciousness…i remember i was eating chicken and i relaxed so much my swollow reflex just did not work properly…all very hazy and not scary for me as i was out of it! my wife was extremely worried… basically i think librium should be used on its own…never with alcohol…i would be really cautious of using it on an ad-hoc basis as this could easily become another problem…i don’t think my story is typical but be very careful…:slightly_smiling_face:
