It went well. She was very kind about the alcohol. She didn’t even blink when I confessed to sometimes taking a shot in the morning before leaving for work.
But we mostly talked about my history just trying to get to know me. I’m big on getting answers as fast as I can…I’m impatient so it is stressing me that I don’t have any homework or anything yet.
I’m glad you had a good first experience. Not everyone is too happy to get homework - you can always ask if she has any (I’ve done this), she may just not want to overwhelm you. Or she might have a reason to either not offer homework or to pace things slowly at the beginning.
One of my favourite things about counselling is that most are good at “unconditional positive regard”, you can say anything and they avoid reacting in a way that might cause discomfort or unnecessary embarrassment or make the client feel judged or threatened.
I’m excited for you, therapy has done a lot for me to help me heal.
I did like her. I’ll admit that I chose her based on her bio (important of course) and her photo. Maybe the photo part is shallow but I needed to feel like s/he would be someone I could open up to. I wanted someone who either looked like a sweet grandma or a confidant/friend. I think I found the confidant.
I knew I would never feel comfortable being so open with a man.
Sounds like you found a good fit and had a great intake appointment. I’m guessing you’ll get some homework soon - and probably will be like "slow the *#@# down!!!"
Therapy is key for me. You dont have to settle for 1 person there is lots of therapists out there and dont be afraid to shop around like buying a car lol but you have to at least give then a chance as well. It’s so important to click with a therapist you can trust and feel comfortable with. Good luck dont give up on therapy
I used to say the same thing about being with a male therapist, until I went to one this week (he was the only one available) and I was completely impressed by him. He’s what I’ve been needing these last few months, so I’m now using him and scratching that off my requirement list.
