What do I need to know about AA?

I have been to one AA meeting about three years ago & it was all female. I have since moved. I have a platonic male friend who attends meetings regularly. Would it be appropriate to ask to go with him? Do they have unisex meetings or is it better to stay segregated. I obviously haven’t looked into the options around here to closely yet but just getting started is there any advice?
The biggest difference about this time and last time is that my husband did not want me attending AA, we have since divorced.

It depends. If you look at online listings they may be either. It should say if it’s a men’s or women’s only meeting, and these are often “closed” (for members only, members being anyone seeking help for their alcoholism). Most open meetings are for anyone, at least around me.

Glad you feel more free to attend now. I’ve found AA really helpful!

I added the AA tag to the thread (top). Clicking that, you may find some other threads with frequent questions/answers!

I think it’s appropriate to ask him. I have a very good friend who’s been sober and in AA for 28 years. I would absolutely ask him to take me to a meeting. He would happily oblige as well.

The preamble has now changed from men and women to people, there is only one rule to go to a meeting and that’s the desire to stop drinking. Go wherever you feel comfortable.

At the 71st General Service Conference annual meeting, held online over April 17 to April 25, 2021, a revision to the AA Preamble was approved through advisory action. The change replaced the words “men and women” with the word “people ” in the first sentence of the preamble

They still read the old version at my meeting but I don’t like to upset them with change.

As a woman, I prefer all female meetings, but I do attend mixed mtgs, too. The main thing to remember is that you should talk to and sit by the women. If there are no women, do find a different meeting for your home group.

Do you really have to read the preamble now or is it memorised?

I virtually know it off by heart now
