What if God was one of us?

I love religion! I love everything about it. And, it makes me so sad when people become so defensive and shut down over it.
I have been working on my Religion BA forever. Nevertheless, I love listening and learning new ideas about God.
Share with me who you think god/dess is, why you left one religion for another, or a favorite sacred scripture verse, or even why the absence of a traditional godhead is comforting.

This will be very personal…so share only what you feel comfortable with.

This is also supposed to be fun and uplifting, so let us all play nice!

What a cool idea for a topic nice!!! I’d love to hear about everyone’s concept of God. Funny I was just thinking this morning how our higher power can be what we want in the program because it’s a spiritual program. The thought of choosing my own higher power always gripped me with fear and I’m still not sure if I can do it and be completely comfortable with it. I feel that I would be denying Christ and that I would go to hell if I did. Most of my experience has been conditioned out of fear and it sucks. I wish I could change my spiritual higher power but I’m scared to. Any advice would be greatly appreciated especially with you going to school for religion thank you!!! :sunglasses::metal:t2:

Who is anyone to say theyre isn’t a god. I believe. And that’s all I need, I’m not worried about other spiritual sickness. I can say anyone who is trying for sobriety, that believing something greater than you which at the end of the day is god, or finding some sort of spirituality which would be through god is definitely something you need to be open about regain sanity. Most likely if you don’t believe in something you will drink again

Thank you for participating! I admire how beautiful and rich Hinduism is; and, how it was well developed millennia before other religions cropped up.
Baha’I is another religion I admire for its inclusiveness.

Reas the a.a book. You can download the app called twelve step tool kit. Read the chapter, we agnostics. A.A is changing me, god is changing me. Everytime I walk away from A.A I become irritable, I stop working my sobriety. Keep hitting up meetings and have faith and read the book. I too didn’t believe and was having a hard time finding my higher power. I’ve found my higher power now, I believe man, I can feel the change.

Thanks for sharing!
Your higher power is something that is personal and complex AND should be a touchstone and a guide.
Do not feel obligated to choose one diety over another. And, there are so many versions of Jesus pick the one that sets your soul on fire!
My Jesus loves unconditionally, which means he love everyone with no strings attached.
I am Catholic, but I also practice magic. So I consider myself a Catholic witch. This is my truth.
Discover yours.
How exciting for you, too!

Fall madly in love with the Creator.

Alcoholism runs deep in my family. Fortunately, I never developed a tongue for it. Nevertheless I used to hear that a “salt shaker can be your god”. That always made me happy.
You are right, even if it is your higher self, it is imperative that you have something greater than your addiction to help you.

Right on @anon60334405. Bro I can totally tell the difference in you, you seem so much better as far as having peace and being happy good job man!!! And @ICanAndWill that’s an interesting idea about Jesus. Do you mean like pick one of His attributes from the Bible like kindness etc. and don’t focus on the gong to hell part??? Just trying to understand thank you!

I was thinking the Joan Osbourne song,

However I’m always open to hear other people’s views on religion and faith,

I’m not much of a believer but I strongly believe that faith is a very personal thing that each of us has our own perception and beliefs where no one could be wrong.

Hell is someplace you put yourself.
God loves…
God is love.
S/he loves you!
It doesn’t make sense to torture you forever because you are beautifully you.
Hell is too distracting.
Focus on love and healing.
Hell is for miserable people.

Ever since Joseph Campbell and The Hero With a Thousand Faces, as well as The Power of Myth series he did with Bill Moyers, I have found inspiration in all the deities. Understanding the similarities throughout religions and mythology brought a great comfort to me, it still does. And keeps me grounded in knowing we are indeed one love.

Great topic! Love your enthusiasm. I toyed with a degree in religion many decades ago, but earning a living got in the way. Enjoy your studies.

If God was one of us, he’d tell a bunch of us to step into the room full of mirrors and take a bloody hard look at ourselves.
