What is the key to staying sober

Wondering what the key is to staying sober? Is it a good support group surrounding yourself with friends and family that don’t drink alcohol or is it just going out and being active?

I struggle with alcohol and I really want to quit but it seems like there’s something that triggers me and then I start drinking again.

Great question! I think the key for me is a combination of things.

  • A strong support system (12 step meetings either in person or online) and this forum. Its important to stay connected.
  • Doing recovery work daily. Our addictions dont take a day off so neither should we. This could be reading literature, prayer, checking in here on TS, going to meetings, being of service to others.
  • Taking care of self. I like to exercise and eat well (well i try to lol), do self care.

I think its important in early recovery to write down our reasons for quitting. We can turn to this when our mind tries to convince use to have “just one”. To avoid people that use/drink and places that involve using/drinking. And to stay connected daily to others in recovery.
Take it one day at a time amd dont pick up no matter what

Never forgetting where a drink or drug will take you. The reality not what your brain wants to make up. Staying busy with positive things. Getting exercise and sunlight. Building a net work and being surrounded by like-minded people that want to stay sober. Determination. Focus. Gratitude.

Really Accepting that you’re an alcoholic or a drug addict and what that really means!!

If you want to lay around and feel sorry for yourself and do nothing and do the same things that you’ve always done then nothing is going to change. Sobriety is fun and exciting. And there is true freedom in not being tied down to a substance or drink. In Recovery you have options. In active addiction you do not.

I’m also talking to myself because I have to remind myself every day And I cannot let my guard down

Whatever you can at first and be kind to yourself.
Binge eat, stay in bed, exercise like mad, get a playstation, get a pet, read, go to the cinema, a late night drive and get a drive through coffee, obsess over music, absolutely anything other than drink.
That’s how I got to 4 weeks so far. best of luck.

The key to sobriety… hmmmm not sure there’s just one thing, there’s been many, in my experience.

  1. Community

  2. The ability to endure prolonged periods of discomfort

  3. Changing your relationship with alcohol

I think these three points will get you on your way to living a sober life.
