Hello y’all. I’m 23 day sober. I’ve tried to quit multiple times. Right now I’m doing good but I would like to stack the odds in my favor. So my question is the purpose of a sponsor. How can they help.
A sponsor is someone you find at Alcoholics Anonymous. They have themselves completed the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. They in turn help guide other folks to get through the 12 steps. Just like someone helped them when they were new.
It all starts with a meeting. That helps.
Best wishes
Hi welcome. Well done on getting soba . @Gabe.G has basically said what u need to know. R u already attending aa meetings ?
My sponsor has turned into my best friend. Same backgrounds, same interests, same outlooks on life, both alcoholics. Hes my absolute go to about everything and anything.
My AA sponsors over the years have been guys who helped me work the steps, and then after a few years, I’ve sought out men as accountability helpers. I tell my sponsor the truth about what I’m thinking and feeling. If I slip into just reporting how grand my life circumstances are, he can call bullshit on me and I’ll know it comes from a place of love.
Been doing it for over 30 years helped a lot of guys so that my purpose
Speaking only for myself.
When I first stopped drinking I didnt have a clue what to do other that not drink. There were also so many emotions (fear, worry, guilt, anger, happiness, etc.) That I was experiencing. My sponsor had been through all of it so he knew how to get me through it. He helped get me through the steps and back to sanity.
I recommend everyone get a sponsor as soon as possible. Even if it’s just a temporary one to get the ball rolling and to see if personalities mesh.
I have gone in the past during prior attempts
They recommend 90 meetings in 90 days because the program is more than just not drinking, that’s where a sponsor comes in. The sponsor will guide you through the steps
In my experience, my sponsor is also the start of my sober network. She has helped me work through step one and I’m now working through step two. She requires that I call her everyday, as her sponsor required of her. It helped me get over feeling like a burden to call someone. Now it’s easy, and it’ll help if I need to reach out because I’m dealing with something harder.
Attending meetings is also a big thing for me. I go to a meeting before work each morning, and it sets my day in the right mindset.
A sponsor is someone who takes you through the 12 steps, just like my sponsors sponsor took him through them. A sponsor is someone who has a working knowledge of the 12 steps and my sponsor knows everything about me having done my 4th and 5th step with him already. Its a relationship (the first one ive ever had) that has been built on honesty trust and through that ive been able to gain other spiritual tools and how to apply those tools in my life today. I need a sponsor to stay sober and today i have 136 days sober. Get one and give the steps a try.
