We had an unfortunate incident just five minutes before the ‘call to arms’ rang out for their supper…
A London tarantula bust in from the open balcony and scurried dangerously close to my feet; I obviously screamed, Blue ran away from it (he doesn’t do tarantula size)…I screamed again, Bear pretended he would deal with it but looked a bit queasy… Luckily, we managed to get a pint glass over it and card under it and released it back into the wild.
So, by the time the new feeder went off everyone was riled up and sitting on a hairline trigger.
Needless to say, they were confused, scared and deeply suspicious of us enrolling them in some squid games based reality show.
Seems like things don’t get boring at your place! ![]()
Never ever do we have a boring moment! ![]()
She programmed the feeder to give them 15 PORTIONS and not 15grams… Each PORTION is 10g. I’m not great at maths, but I know for sure this ain’t good for Bears diet.
See, that’s why I do the old school way! Using these

OH NO
What a way to introduce the new feeding system. Hope the second attempt goes smoother.
It’s very true!! This has been in our news for weeks now… And it happened at 8.30pm after the 7pm curfew which we failed to observe… They are getting bigger due to global warming, and now shall be known as London tarantulas.
Brits warned about 7pm spider infestation coming soon | This Is Local London
Oh it’s so lovely having another cat in the house! Milo made himself at home. He is so relaxed… and he was a really good boy at the vets as well. We had to restart vaccinations, as his previous owner didn’t get the booster on time.
Yes, he looks like he’s lived with you his entire life…
They’re Giant House spiders (Eratigena duellica) they can grow really big upto 4 inches span heel to heel, they’re the ones you usually find in your bath looking for a drink.
Not totally harmless they will bite when cornered or think they might get squashed ![]()
The bite stings for about half an hour then it’s over.
The ones you want to watch out for are lace-web spiders, black and shiny, aggressive and the bite hurts like fuck and lasts upto 12 hours, from previous experience, you don’t want to go there
All UK spiders are venomous, even money spiders; reactions to the various venoms varies, but remember they are usually more scared of you ![]()
Don’t kick an indoor spider outside you’ll kill it, and it will haunt you for ever and ever ![]()
&![]()
How can they be indoors if they come indoors from outside? I think all spiders are outdoor spiders who push their luck.
Even my boys were scared of this spider, and usually they are savage with them. As soon as the pint glass was on it they both turned into Billy Big Bollocks, but it was all guff, I could tell. I heard their quiet sighs of relief as it got turfed outside. If I ever see any six inch ones I am leaving the country. It’s one of my only true fears/phobias.
When I was little, probably about 6/7, I was playing hide and seek with my cousins and I hid in a cupboard in the dark. A huge spider crawled on my arm and bit me. I remember jumping out the cupboard at the pain, and flinging this giant spider off my arm.
Everyone had always told me all my young life that “they are more scared of you than you are of them, and they are completely harmless” and I was enraged at the blatant lies! I’ve been slightly hysterical around spiders since then. I really detest them ![]()

Granted the GHS is usually found outside in the summer, but it’s like us brits they come inside when it gets colder (about now) to be cosy, find a mate and a good cup of tea ![]()
But as the name suggests they really do like houses especially attics, ceiling and wall voids etc.
They are fast as fuck around 1.7 ft/sec which would be equivalent of a human running ar 50 mph ![]()
![]()
Once they’ve been inside for a while and acclimatised a move outside will kill them.
Spider month is usually October.
Spiders are our friends ![]()
This is Ronnie, upside-down as per usual.
In not sure if your facts are impressive or terrifying.
If I left this one inside it would be dead anyway as my cats wouldn’t let it coexist. I have no cellar, no attic, no nice old musty spaces for them… It’s a new build with little space and storage areas.
I am sorry to the spider gods, but I did what I could to ensure my cats didn’t maul it. I don’t want it to die, but there was no other choice apart from me keeping it like you keep Fred/Ronnie ? ![]()

I can deal with keeping rats as pets but not spiders.
I had a discussion with a giant spider on the outside wall lately. I told them to stay outside otherwise WHACK. Spider was not impressed and went away ![]()
I can understand your point, however my 4 Bombays don’t bother with Spoders so they live a charmed life in our house ![]()
However, the catz do have a pathological hatred of all thing flying from fruit flies to eagles and of course squirrels, which Tici eats lightly seasoned and still warm.
I’ve got 2 jumping spiders, Ronnie’s a Florida JS and Pip’s a Bold JS.
They’ll grow to about 20mm heel to heel and live upto 4 years, and yes they can bite, but it’s like a pin prick and only stings for a couple of minutes if that.
Pip’s just come out of molt and Ronnie’s just going in for his 4th time (usually 8/9 molts before fully grown)
I’ll take some more pics and post them later (as long as they play ball)

That sounds less threatening than my stupid balcony indoor outdoor spiders… At least yours are marginally cute
I’m actually also quite worried about the false black widow spiders that are getting more and more prevalent here in the south of England. I often see them on the exterior building walls and out the front in the car park. I know that in my MILs garage in Kent there are literally hundreds of false black widows, more than just normal traditional spiders, but there seems to be a lot more than normal here in North London. I’m genuinely terrified they will bite my cats ![]()
I’ve decided the balcony doors get closed at tea time now. We can all compromise ![]()
Ps, who is Fred? Why am I thinking your spider was called Fred? ![]()
It’s not the FWS you need to really worry about, it’s the Noble FWS whose bite can be really serious causing necrosis (rotting of the skin)
they’re bites are nasty and can have complications.
Both spiders are a invasive species from the Canaries, and although I love spiders I kill them when ever I see them as they prey on our native species ![]()
First pic Noble FWS, second Cupboard spider which is your common FWS
We’ve even got the twats in South Yorkshire, and to add insult to injury they’ll be wanting to come inside soon, cupboards, under the sink are favourite places for them
Ronnie hammocking up for his molt, it’s called a hammock as its open at both ends
Edit: wrong pictures, doh
