Being addicts in some shape form or fashion we have all tried to use will power in hopes of getting sober, with no avail, always falling short. Using will power as a break (using it to stop something) has never worked and always sets us up for failure. We all needed (most of us) some sort of higher power to get us clean and sober, whether that higher power be God, a treatment center or who you consider God. We needed that higher power to give us the courage, motivation, and determination to realize that our addiction has made things unmanageable and accept the help that has been extended to us.
Once clean and sober (out of withdrawals) this is where will power comes into play, utilizing will power to STAY clean is a sustainable use of it. Why is this the case? Will power was designed to be used as a Gas pedal not as the breaks!! Will power is used to propel us in the given direction, not to redirect us into the desired direction. So just for today try and use your will power as the gas pedal and see how it defers from using it as the break.
