Im 48 hours of not drinking heavy liquor… the sweating and shaking is gonna be the death of me when does it get better…
That depends a bit of the amound of drinking you did in general. For most of us the first 3 days are the hardest physically.
Shakes, sweats, feeling restless and grumpy, bad sleep, etc. If you have drinking very much heavy liquor for a long time it can be dangerous to detox on your own.
Thank you…
Hi Meg, welcome to the forum
Ohhhhh yes the sweats and shakes are awful! From memory the sweating lasted at least 5 days for me, I tried to drink lots of water with electrolytes to help counteract any potential dehydration and also a daily multi B complex vitamin.
As @SoberWalker mentions it can be extremely dangerous to withdraw on your own - do you live on your own or have someone with you?
Please don’t hesitate to see your GP or seek medical support if you feel its worsening or becoming unmanageable.
Also I’ve included a helpful clip to watch that has been shared in this forum previously. Please take good care of yourself and keep in touch with us
Ps Great effort on your 2 days, it takes guts and bravery! So even though you feel like shit be a little proud of yourself too
If I can make a suggestion - maybe try to journal this process you’re going through. It may help and be a great reminder down the track if/when you feel tempted to pick back up.
Take it One Day At A Time!
It’s important to remember you didn’t get here overnight and you won’t get out either. I would say it takes two weeks to a month to detox and find your new clarity. Hang in there, stay hydrated, and seek out professional help if you feel you may need it. Sending you peace and healing.
Thank you I will try and watch it tonight. I feel a little bit better today, but still haven’t been able to sleep. Been drinking lots of water.
Keep at it, you’re doing great ok! The lack of sleep sux but in time will improve. I remember telling myself its all part of the process and that I was doing something really good for myself by quitting alcohol. All the shit was leaving my body and trying to rebalamce myself, it takes time… warm baths, relaxation music (insight timer app is great) and magnesium tablets helped alittle but I basically I had to ride it out.
Keep at it Meg, you will get through this
Have u ever considered Suboxone treatment works with opiates and alcohol you know to make the symptoms subside til u can wein off might help I hope your ok though just keep strong proud of you in making that next right step you know it will be worth it in the long run
This is my second day now still a bit crap but i reckon itll be a month bofore itll be totally clear… i did few weeks after Christmas and i was crabit as hell still so hopefully that passes too… keep it up itll pass.
No, but I feel a lot better today. Been drinking so much electrolytes and water. Advil and my anxiety medicine. The cold sweats we bad again last night but have seem to stop throughout the night. Nightmares like care tho.
Well I ask bc I am currently on Suboxone and it does wonders for me it was a life saver so that’s why I suggested it do u have any Suboxone clinics where u live
Glad youre doing better. That. Shit. Is. No. Joke.
Get baby wipes for the diarrhea. Shower a lot. Sleep. Treat yourself as if youre recovering from a life threatening disease. (You are)
Ugh. I don’t miss that feeling. Its crippling. The shakes eventually went away not sure when but it took over a month (maybe 3 and then there were still some tremors). I thought I was broken for life. You probably couldnt convince me otherwise. Havent drank now in 2.5 years zero shakes havent though about them in awhile. I had them bad bad bad.
It DOES get better I didnt believe people that told me but it does. Do whatever you have to do to stay sober and not let that first one in. Good luck! Wish I could do more to help if so let me know.
It was the baby wipes for me, thank you for the advice. Been taking showers a lot it helps tremendously. I feel so much today haven’t even taking my anxiety medicine.
I’m glad you’re on subs, and, as of 2 months ago all prescribers can write for Suboxone as long as the have an unrestricted DEA license! Keep kicking ass lady.
Thought about other areas of support and focus? I do this place daily, my AA home group at least weekly and getting out to help other alcoholics. It helps, it all helps.
Hows it going?
Good, a lot better today. Actually was able to go to dinner and eat food with my kids. But just in a sucky situation right now. Living in an extended stay so it’s making it extra hard.
Thanks for asking tho!
Yeah. Really nothing is going to.probably fix the suck other than time, but those moments of peace can pull you through to the other side. It does get much much MUCH better.
