Women: hormones way out of whack after quitting drinking?

Day 34 for me. Was wondering if anyone else had any experiences with their hormones being unbalanced after quitting drinking (and I started to notice it during). Yes I know what all can disrupt your hormones (and how important the liver is in keeping balance). My big question is does anyone have any recommendations on hormonal balance supplements for women. I’ve come across many but am not sure which to try. Thanks!

In my case, I quit drinking, cleaned up my diet, started exercising, and taking vitamins regularly and I’ve finally got my hormones in order. I had my first monthly cycle sober (but I’ve only been sober 9 days) and I finally had a normal cycle without all the horrible symptoms I had before. I read about b vitamin depletion from drinking so I take a multivitamin in the morning and a b complex in the evening. It seems to have helped a lot. I haven’t had any phantom hangovers or other symptoms I’ve read that people have after years of daily heavy drinking. I’d look into the vitamins! I hope you feel better very soon!

Really appreciate your input. I eat mostly very healthy and have for years. I exercise. I take vitamins. Little to no caffeine (absolutely zero coffee). Plenty of water all day long (rarely will have a beverage that isn’t water…lucky I love water). I’m looking for something a little more, hence the supplements. I was sober longer than you for my first non drinking period and everything was still the same (issues). Was hoping to see some changes by now. :frowning: want to continue this with addition of supplement and then if no luck, doctor.

Also i dont eat meat and take in VERY little dairy, so those are not the issue either. I’m hoping my liver maybe just needs some more time to balance out…

I’d been advised in a yoga recovery program to check out L-Glutamine & DLPA to help regulate hormones. Both are a form of amino-acid therapy. Glutamine helps with the sugar cravings, while DLPA helps to combat depression & stress. Worth checking out to aid in stabilizing body/mind!

At 34 days your liver should be mostly recovered (they say it rebuilds itself in 6 weeks). Maybe it just takes time for the rest of the body to understand and get on board too. LOL

Actually I was not aware of liver function and hormones. After I had my first kid my hormones were a mess and my cycle was way off. First I took a LARGE dose of B Complex (B100 daily) and that got my cycle back to 28 days rather than 32. But my ovulation was still late (day 17 instead of day 14) so I took soy isoflavones to move it forward to. But I only did that because I was struggling with infertility and early miscarriages…I would recommend the soy if you aren’t concerned about fertility right now. Too much soy at the wrong times can cause further problems.

Okay…I babbled. All that to say B vitamins will really help regulate your cycle and it will also help with PMS. I’ve heard that Evening Primrose Oil will also help but I have no experience with that.

After reading about those they both sound really beneficial for multiple issues I’m having! Going to look for them today. Thank you so much!

Okay two ladies mentioning the b vitamins…I will have to rethink my current vitamin regimen and maybe make some adjustments! Thank you so much for the info!

My issues aren’t really my cycle but still definitely my hormones  don’t want to get into TMI haha. But also stuff like hormonal acne all over my chin all month long now. Oy . Hang in there, body! I swear I’m making good decisions now

I take niacinamide (B3), omega-3, magnesium, and a multi…my skin is clear as can be and my menses is normal now. I haven’t had any pms moodiness either. My sex drive is lacking but I’m on an antidepressant/anxiety med. I’ll definitely check out the L-glutamine for the sugar cravings…been really bad lately and I’ve gained weight. Thank you ladies, great topic.

If I could get my mood swings levelled out first and foremost, I think both myself & my husband would be forever grateful

For anyone interested, I am going to start on a supplement by Lorna Vanderhaeghe called Estrosmart. She has some other great sounding supplements I am looking into as well.

Seeing a lot of suggestions on here to take Vitamin B- make sure it’s a “methylated” form such as Methylfolate or Methylcobalamin. I take Jarrow brand found at the vitamin store.
If your body can’t break down synthetic B vitamins (the cheap brand name junk) then it’s not even worth taking them and can make things worse!

Yeah that’s where the “vitamins just make really expensive pee” saying stems from  thank you!!
