You get what you pay for!

As you go through life, you find out that there are items that you can buy a cheap version of and then there are items that are better off spending the extra money on, because you really do get what you pay for.

What are these items that you’ve experienced?

To contribute, provide an item you can cheap out on, and an item you really should spend the money on. For example:

Cheap: Shoes. Purely as a functional item, I don’t need to spend money on shoes for day to day use.

Spend the money on: Mechanic tools. There is nothing more frustrating then trying to change a battery and breaking a socket. Spend the money on a good set of tools, because you get what you pay for!

What’s yours?

Ha, take yours and flip it.
I recently bought the cutest (most expensive) Sorel wedge booties that are water resistant from the snow & slush but nice enough for me to wear to the office, or casually with jeans.
My tool collection consists of dollar store screwdrivers, a hammer & a tape measure I took from my grandparents house.

Cheap
Work shirts (overshirts; not the undershirts). Value Village / second-hand is fine. Especially in my industry - I work field sales in construction and dust and paint is par for the course - sooner or later my shirts are gonna get dirt on ‘em.

Spend the money on
Chocolate. There is a huge difference between quality chocolate and the cheap / dollar-store knockoff brands. For someone who likes good chocolate - it’s worth it.

Garbage bags spend money on garbage bags and dish soap I feel you can’t go cheap on these 2 things

I like this thread
Like Lashline, I’m a flip it as well… I don’t care for the cheap shoes. I like my feet comfy and need higher quality materials. But, my tools could come from the dollar store  Hey… better than a butter knife that I would use lol!!

I like to go to second hand stores and estate sales for wall decor and certain furniture… like Matt, why spend more money on something you can get cheaper for practically new? Some food products I’ll find the deals as well: butter, pasta, fruits and veggies, etc.
High quality musts: perfumes, sheets, and pet food (off the top of my head)

I agree with these two as well!! You change your mind on cheap garbage bags as soon as one breaks on you and you have to clean up the mess

It’s worth springing for good shoes and a good mattress.

I played soccer in cheap cleats when I first started up playing again as an adult. I’d have to ice my feet a few times a day for like a week after. After 2 or 3 times I sprung for the good ones.
I notice a similar difference in running shoes. Good running shoes are so worth it.

A good mattress is night and day.
Is that sort of a pun or something?

Cheap: Food… food is food in my opinion. I get the same products at the dollarstore or cheaper grocery stores like Walmart/superstore etc as I can get from an expensive grocery store

Spend the money on: a good mattress (I used to use very cheap mattresses and honestly the lack of sleep or the amount of stiffness and pain I was in first thing in the morning was brutal and effected me physically and mentally)

I will say that for specialty footwear, you do get what you pay for, like hiking boots! I’ll spring for a good pair of boots.

Unpopular opinion: I prefer my old $500 mattress over our tempurpedic, my back hurts everyday now. :frowning:

I don’t mess around with my walking/running shoes. I need my feet to last me. Also agree with a mattress and taking good care of your car for safety purposes.

I shop Aldi for staple food items.

Great thread @HoofHearted

I agree, with one exception, butter! My wife buys the cheap butter and I think it’s gross, gotta spend the extra $$ and get the good stuff!

Cheap: over the counter medicine. The store brand contains the same ingredients and works just the same.

Spend money on: Shoes, toilet paper, paper towels and garbage bags have to be top brand.

Thrifty…use dish towels and rags instead of paper towels that can only be used once.

I will splurge on socks but wear them until they have holes.
