I would rather develop an addiction of reading books than any other. Currently reading ’ Sapiens’ by Yuval Noah Harare. Any book, novel or autobiography would you recommend? Anyone who would like to discuss about their favorite literary material?
I’ve been reading more now that I’m sober! I recommend Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson. I just looked up the book you’re reading, it sounds really interesting!
I’ve read a bunch of books this year (it’s much easier to read when you’re sober!!). My favourites have been 2 by Liane Moriarty…Big Little Lies and What Alice Forgot. They are a bit fluffy but so well written. I’ll be reading more of her books for sure.
I gave up reading for fun while drinking. I retained nothing, so it just frustrated me lol plus, I was trying to do school, too. A few months ago, I drunkily/impulsively bought some books online, so now, I’m finally getting to them!
Ive just thought how nice it would be to get back into reading on an evening. Ive got a great collection of the classics & i am going to my bookcase now to select one!
Currently reading ‘cloud atlas’ by David Mitchell.
I would never have managed to read it before i stopped drinking. All the blurred paragraphs, falling asleep, not remembering what I read, re-reading the same page over and over, absolutely no concentration.
Now I read for hours on end and LOVE it.
Maybe we should have a book forum or something.
Innocent Man by John Grisham
His first, possibly his only nonfiction book. Highly recommended!!!
Favorite book: Bones of the Moon by Jonathan Carroll. It’s about an ongoing dream that starts seeping into reality, a little boy named Pepsi that was aborted by the main character and her helping him get to the other side in her dreams…in a way. Total mind fuck and a great read.
I’m a huge fan of Carroll, love the genre he writes.
Ha, same. I was almost always drunk or buzzed in class for my MA program.
Steven Kings Dark Tower Series!!! Now I know what you’re thinking and no, it’s not your typical King horror. It’s his fantasy epic. His LOTR. 7 books that change my life. I even MMed my kid Roland after the Gunslinger😉
Also Terry Goodkind Sword of Truth. Gosh, these books kept me busy for like 2 years. There’s like 13 of them. Great great read!
King just is the King ![]()
Now everyone around me is freaking out because of the new movie “IT“. I think i’ll get the book instead of watching it.
IT looks pretty gangster. The Dark Tower movie on the other hand… Well let’s just say don’t expect much. Lol
Lol okay, thanks for the advice ![]()
Goshawk Squadron. Derek Robinson.
Brutal funny book about WWI fighter pilots.
First read it when I was 12 or 13. Main character is 24 so when I first read it that seemed like an adult to me. He is described as “Young to be a Major, old to be a pilot”
Have re-read it a number of times since. And realise just how young these men were. Flying planes that were as likely as not to fall apart in the air.
The generation that saw an end to any idea still left that there might be any glamour or chivalry in war.
“This is not a dual. You do not walk up to the enemy and challenge him. You shoot him in the back while he’s picking his nose and doesn’t know you are there”
Currently reading: blackout remembering the things I drank to forget by Sarah hepola. Humorous and enthralling
So this was a lot of years ago,and yes the movie didn’t do the book Justice and it’s for the science fiction nerds. But if you want a thick book with lots of small words for time killing and distraction, this will do it. L Ron Hubbard’s Battlefield Earth. Like I say you got to be into that kind of stuff, but it takes a while to read.
Tom Robbins!! Jitterbug Perfume is my favorite. I read Half Asleep In Frog Pajamas last time I was in jail
I always have some sort of epiphany or existential comfort when I read his stuff.
Hmm. I don’t know about favorite, but I’m currently reading Scar Tissue; Anthony Keidis’ autobiography. It’s very dark and messed up.
I wanted to share this book that I am reading right now!!! It’s called you are a badass by jen sincero and it is Amazing it’s so funny and sooooo true I hope y all consider reading it!!!
