Back in October, I did my first (and likely. only) hike in 2021. We hiked up to about 7k feet to check out the Larch trees as they changed color before shedding their needles. I made a short video.

Loving all your updates!

Canā€™t wait to be able to get back to some proper walking again. Hopefully my iron/fitness levels will allow it in the next couple of months. Until then I am happy to enjoy all of your amazing adventures :hugs:

My 18-year-old hiking boot got torn on the sides, irreparably. It has been my constant companion through the years. I wore it on my hikes in the Carpathians, the Tatras, the Pyrenees, the Appenines, in the Middle-East and during all my short trips and hikes wherever I was. Iā€™m going to take it for a last ride into my favorite forest.

Question- Iā€™m looking into getting some hiking boots so I donā€™t keep wearing my running shoes. This last hike was really rocky and the shoes were not the best. Anyways, yā€™all have any brand recommendations?

Winters here are perfect for hiking in the morning. Sun is warm but not hot, air is cool and dry.

I couldnā€™t get a fit in Keeneā€™s or Solomonā€™s, some Merrellā€™s are like fancy runners ā€¦ many love all three of those
Iā€™ve used Hokaā€™s ( One One I think ) for last four years and happy with them. Over the ankle and waterproof. I want my ankles protected from brush etcetera. For the most part they should fit you pretty comfortably from the very beginning.
Itā€™s old days where you had to break them in for a long time. Of course all will need some break in. You will get lateral support with the hikers that youā€™re not getting with your running shoes.

Awesome! I make sure to wear pants lol but I for sure need a more stable pair of shoes. Thank you for that info. This coming year Iā€™m planning on coming to Colorado and the north of New Mexico for hikes. Iā€™ve seen some pictures and itā€™s flipping gorgeous. I know I need the right shoes first and itā€™s an investment. Iā€™ll look into those.

@Alisa I didnā€™t know hoka sold hiking boots.

I use Adidas Terrex gore Tex for years, every pair last a year or a year and a half (i walk regularly). There are a lot of good shoes, merrel, salomon and many moreā€¦
Btw the terrex are vegan, which is important for me as I dont use leather.

(Edit: Adidas Terrex Swift goretex)

I really like barefoot shoes - thereā€™s a UK brand called Freet which have a good range (vegan and leather options). Iā€™ve got some casual shoes which have held up really well after a year of regular day to day use and a hiking pair which I havenā€™t put through their paces, but they are super comfy and the water resistance is decent.

Edit to add - I wore the hiking shoes for the first time walking up Mt Snowdon earlier this year. Like wearing slippers! No blisters.

Thanks guys!! I have some looking to do and probably some saving but my next serious hikes probably wonā€™t be till after winter

I can speak to the Solomonā€™s from experienceā€¦ @Runningfree If youā€™re going to be doing a lot of stuff with rocks I would not recommend Solomon. Theyā€™re extremely slippery when itā€™s wet and not the best traction on dry ground either.

That being said, they are incredibly comfortable.

I like these Keen ones I found but some of the reviews talk about how warm their feet get. Being in the desert I wonder if that will be a problem since it can go from really cold in the morning to super warm

I use Oboz because they come in wide models. I love em.

However, I found that hiking boots are a very personal item. What works for some donā€™t work for others.

If you have an REI nearby, go there and they will work with you to find a pair that you and youā€™re feet will love! They do a good job at finding the best one for your needs.

I was wondering if a store like that was out there! I love my running fittings lol

I looked and there is a store in Santa Fe so guess I need to plan a little getaway to buy hiking gear :joy::joy:

I do like the height of those boots. Seems like a good height to protect my ankles. Iā€™m really just worried about my feet getting overheated.
I want to hit Taos and that area of course and I was gonna go to cloudcroft a week ago but my knee was acting up. Iā€™ve done a bit of the Guadalupe trail and look forward to more there in this next year.
I love the AllTrails app. Do you have the paid version? Is it worth it?

I love my Lowa Renegade. I do not know if you can buy them where you live. This is my 3th pair of them. I walk a lot.

I have the smallest version, you can buy them in different width.
My advice: go to a good outdoor shop where they can give you solid advice and where you can try them on. There are so many different brands and sizes as well as different feet :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
Tip: buy them one size bigger then your actual size. When you walk your feet needs space for some swelling because of the heat.

Iā€™m with @HoofHearted and @SoberWalker in fitting before buying. I settled on Scarpa in my local outdoor shop, Love both pairs and wear 'm depending on the terrain and weather.

A few weeks to go to reach my yeargoal of 2500 km (1553 miles).
Do you make yourself a goal to stimulate yourself to go for a walk?

Thanks for all the advice and the pictures guys!! I know I need the width because my feet like to swell a good bit when walking/ running. Iā€™ll make my way to a store for a fitting and post my bootsā€¦ eventually. (Might be a few months)
