Good morning! Curious to see if anyone has any suggestions for a good GPS app or an actual unit? Yesterday I was using an app called GAIA and man I got myself off trail 3 times yesterday and had to back track to find my way again. Super exhausting wasting so much energy going the wrong way and back again. The problem was that when the trail would break I couldn’t get my proper location to know if I was on the trail until I was way too off. Not sure if that makes sense but thank you! :sunglasses::metal:t2:

My personal experience is limited because there’s no long trails here, but Alltrails is highly recommended by many.

Highly recommend alltrails premium especially when starting out. Only $30 a year, gives you the option to download maps, and navigation is fairly accurate. From what ive heard from friends who have a dedicated hiking GPS, the navigation is comparable to a GPS that would cost you a few hundred bucks.

I would also recommend taking a course on how to use a map and compass if you plan on doing longer hikes.

Thank you @adrivdahl and @DryIn785 I will check it out thank you! :sunglasses::metal:t2:

How’s it going. AllTrails is the app to have for sure. Hiking is a huge part of my life and business. I’m a retired park ranger and now run a nonprofit that works on conservation. AllTrails is very accurate and will give you some peace of mind that you are on the correct trail.

Lol make it 4. I also use alltrails. I have been looking into the Gamin in reach gps. It will track you and then show you the way back. Along with sos and other cool features. Pretty pricey though

Lol sweet! I know what I must do now :rofl::rofl: Thank you! And yeah the Gaia app wouldn’t let me know I was off trail until I was way off. Super exhausting for real!

Unfortunately, seeing as I am new to the community I am unable to post photos. However, I’ve been an avid hiker for most of my younger years. Finally just got back into it after 15 years. Being in Northern California I’m a regular in the Lake Tahoe area and a couple of weeks ago I was lucky enough to get some high desert hiking in while visiting TriCities Washington. In May, I’m going to conquer Mt Whitney! Possibly Half Dome for my 42nd bday & 1yr sober bday! :green_heart::mountain_snow:

I haven’t been to Northern California yet and Lake Tahoe is on my list for next year. Thought I’d share this, it looks so cool! :sunglasses::metal:t2:

Hi! Gotta throw myself into the conversation because two things on my hiking bucket list: Tahoe and NC (Pisgah NP).

Tahoe may be on indefinite hold. The lowest point on the Tahoe Rim Trail is about 1,000 feet higher than than the highest point I’ve hiked (Clingmans Dome). I figured a few days of altitude acclimation would suffice, then I was diagnosed with COPD. All the cool gear I got for Tahoe has to be replaced with UL gear.
Pisgah is still on the table. :camping:

Yea, the TRT can be intimidating if not used to the area. It’s an ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL hike and well worth the acclimation time. A day or two hiking around the lower shoreline trails should be sufficient. Even driving the perimeter of the lake is really helpful. Hopefully you can make it up this way sometime!
