Hello everyone. I’m new here, my first post actually. I’ve read that Topamax can be useful for alcohol cravings. I’m wondering if anyone has any experience with it?
I would check with a doctor. I know it’s also a seizure med, my sister used to take it.
Ty, I may do that…
I took Topamax for migraines. My neurologist calls it “Dopamax” because it can have terrible effects on your cognition like memory loss; I experienced that and had trouble with verbal recall too (difficulty remembering words; tip of the tongue phenomenon) so I switched to a different med. But alcohol can make ya pretty dopey too and different meds work for different people!
…wow a neurologist / comedian!
I’ve taken it for migraines. It makes me so sleepy when I drink alcohol that I don’t drink much anymore (1-2 per sitting max) because I basically fall asleep at the table. Alcohol isn’t my drug of choice however, so your results may vary.
@Just424 I’ve been taking Topamax I take 600 mgs.a day 300 in the morning 300 at night for 3 yrs.Topamax is used to mak you not crave alcohol. I didn’t know this until after I started it. I don’t take it for alcohol use. I take it for severe migraines. When you first start taking Topamax my neurologist starts it out really slow, and then move it up every six weeks about 50 mgs in the morning 50 mgs in the evening. It maked me real loopy and kind of drunk feeling and Dopey in the beginning, foggy minded, but as I got adjusted to it, that all went away. THAT ALL GOES AWAY IN TIME..I absolutely love Topamax it changed my moods. It helped me with depression, and mood swings. Topamax is used for a whole lot of other disorders. Such as things like depression, bipolar, epilepsy, migraines, and alcohol controlling alcohol use. I swear by Topamax.. In the beginning I called it topadope…
