Little over 30 days here, 2nd time making it this far… Having memory or attention issues and still some on and off brain fog, with a very noticeable blah mood, not happy not sad, very neutral almost. Even with a very intense diet change as well (due to fatty liver; cutting out all alcohol obviously, no soda or fast food, more fruits and veggies etc) This all happened last time in which I started drinking again due to the lack of feeling anything. Looking around here and researching, I’ve seen a lot of vitamin B talk for recovery. Wondering if its just recommended for early recovery or in general a good one to take regularly for brain health? Also does anyone have these same feelings? I feel all alone in this ![]()
You are not alone in feeling blah. Addiction really messes with our bodies ![]()
For me I have not faced things quite as strongly as you are describing here but I have had some low mood and simple exercise (walking) has been helpful for me.
There’s a really good thread where the thread creator shares feelings very much like what you’re sharing here - maybe this will be relevant:
Thank you for reaching out, the article was definitely a different perspective. I couldn’t relate to the anger side of things, but I can see maybe the extremeness of feeling one way or another or simply not at all in my case could be similar
That hollowness is common. For me what helped in my early days is being together in meetings with other addicts in recovery. They were the only people who understood (including understanding the blah).
If you don’t have a group yet you can find a list of recovery groups here:
I like that word, hallowness. Feels very fitting. I think that finding a meeting would be a great next step as only here is where I can truly speak my mind and have people understand and talk through things. Thank you!
Very relatable post, im very early in this and havent shared that im in a program with many friends or family yet, for many reasons. But i knew i needed real accountability so i go to meetings which are GREAT for not feeling alone. If you have the option in your area to try out different meetings ive found that they have different vibes so you can find people you click with. But no matter which meeting you go to you will find friendly people who are ALWAYS happy to talk to newcomers.
As far as overall mood and energy, you might try vitamin D, especially in the winter most of us are low which my doc said makes us depressed.
Congrats on 30 days
keep going and its bound to get better ![]()
I remember feeling all that early on. Especially the cognitive issues, brain fog, memory etc.
I took vitamin B complex for some time in early sobriety, I don’t know it helped because, many vitamins take several months to reach maximum effect and well, the brain fog goes away after some time too, so, maybe it had some benefit?
A lot of the cognitive issues will go away, it just takes time. You are definitely not alone, many of us went through or are going through the same! Hang in there, it gets better.
I took a vitamin b complex today for the first time and (tmi) my urine turned highlighter yellow, doctor google said its fine, but did you have that? I am well hydrated so its definitely not dehydration ![]()
Thank you! I think that might be the best next step for me as well. Also didn’t even think about vitamin D that’s smart!
yes, that’s normal. i’ve been taking vitB complex for years for health issues (not addiction related). your pipi turns bright yellow ![]()
when you eat beetroot it turns pink-red, when you eat spinach your poo turns green. intake can colour your outgoings ![]()
Yup, it B like that sometimes. Certain vitamins and salts have an inherent neon yellow color to it. Totally normal.
As long as you take it type thing or does it fade?
As long as you take them it’ll happen. The more water you have the less intense the color. Personally I aim for 96 to 128 ounces of water a day, my urine is still bright, but not as concentrated. The yellow color means your body took what it needs and discarded the rest.
I would definitely recommend talking with a dietitian, they can help determine if you even need supplements. Truth is, most people don’t, unless you have an underlying condition that causes malnutrition, are in a severe calorie deficit, or have a diet of only processed foods, vitamin supplements may be necessary.
I was given access to a dietitian from my GP (insurance covered it) and she helped me navigate a diet to combat high BP, cholesterol and pre-diabetes, it was a great resource that I didn’t know existed!
Yeah thats the plan to talk with a dietitian, my diet has definitely gotten better, not perfect, but I drank for so long I know my body is lacking some things it needs… I know just today I felt a lot different which I dont know how quick vitamins work, but I could definitely feel a lot more energy almost too much…
Good to know, just weird seeing something so bright thinking something was wrong lol
I’m almost one year in and I still have these days often. I drink energy drinks and this sometimes helps
Good on you for almost a year! And yes I have found caffeine has more of an effect now that I’m sober.
What you’re going thru is completely “normal” considering how bad we beat our bodies up in our active addictions be it alcohol drugs or both
Thank you for that and one more thing …if you cut yourself blood should be red if it blue you just may be an alien from outer space. Teehee
