Day 2 - Starting Over Again

I have been trying to stop drinking for a little over 5 years now. I’ve signed up for several online programs. Here is what I’ve tried so far:

Tempest (Holly Whittaker’s program) went through 2 months of material

Sober Sis (Jenn Kautsch’s program) Did the 28 day challenge – which led up to my best friend’s wedding in Las Vegas, and I had COVID 2 weeks out of this challenge

Hello Someday (Casey McGuire Davidson’s program) This one I did for 100 days in 2023! drank on day 101 an totally lost all the momentum I’d built up

The Path (Annie Grace’s deep dive program) made it to month 6, and I realized I needed to make some major life changes in order to get to a place where I could successfully stop using alcohol to cope with life, then basically dropped out.

Book’s I’ve read:
Blackout - Book by Sarah Hepola

We Are the Luckiest - Book by Laura McKowen

The Sober Diaries - Book by Clare Pooley.

Easy Way for Women to Quit Drinking - Allen Carr

I’m currently re-reading The Sober Diaries since it so closely resembles my journey with alcohol and being a parent. I have all the head knowledge regarding quitting, but I’m afraid I’m missing the community part, and that’s why it never sticks.

Please help me find my community and make this my last time starting over again. – Love to all on this journey :pink_heart:

Welcome 40
I came on here as a 60. Been sober since.
This is a great sober community. It sounds like you got a lot of tools and knowledge about what it takes.

Have a good read around. Join in when you’re comfortable. I hope you find what you’re looking for.

Obviously you don’t have all the knowledge. Welcome to TS :sunflower:

Recovery is work, daily, not 28 days here, 100 days there. I miss some basics in understanding how addiction works in your list. It helps to understand how the addicted brain is wired.
Have a good read around, check in and keep us posted, make a plan, join a program like AA or Recovery Dharma, and do your recovery work. Never crave alone. Come here, share. Take it ODAAT.

“Recovery is work.” I like this perspective. I’ve thrown a lot of things at quitting, but I’ve never framed it in this way.

Has anyone used ChatGPT for recovery help? I was feeling really down yesterday (a day 1 for me after a bad night) and desperately trying to find something to pick me up out of the pit – I typed in help with alcohol recovery. I got a load of useful tips and inspiration. It told me to check back in today. So I did and it gave me another helpful tidbit of encouragement / motivation! This is what it said today:

:clipboard: Your Tiny Step for Today:

→ Focus on rebuilding trust with yourself with one small promise:

“Today I keep treating my body with kindness — water, food, and rest.”

No huge expectations.
No “perfect” days needed.
Just kindness to yourself — one choice at a time.

Optional bonus:
If you feel up to it, take 5 minutes to stretch your body gently or step outside for some fresh air — it helps signal to your brain: “I’m moving forward.”

Welcome @40sthenewsober :waving_hand:

Talking Sober is a place that has helped me understand how addiction and recovery from addiction are global: everyone, on every continent, in every culture, faces this. It doesn’t discriminate.

There’s lots of wisdom here on TS. This is one of my fave threads: Resources for our recovery

You are correct. I don’t think it’s the program for me. I did look into SMART Recovery yesterday and downloaded their first worksheet. I scanned the meeting times and will try to find one to attend or more likely do online.

Definitely keep trying 12 steps works for everyone I’ve met. I’m coming up on 7 years and I couldn’t do it until I found AA/NA. Bet that’s the case for you, too.
