Developer Survey: What made you download Sober Time?

Hello everyone,

I’m looking to get some feedback on how you came about Sober Time. For those interested, could you please respond to the below questions?

  1. What made you look for a sobriety app?
  2. What search terms did you use to find the app? (If you can remember)
  3. After you searched, a list of possible apps came up. What made you tap on Sober Time?
  4. After you went into Sober Time’s store listing, what stood out? Screenshots, reviews, feature description? What did you see that made you press the download button?
  5. Were you hesitant about anything before downloading? Did something look off?
  6. Did you try any other apps before settling on Sober Time? If so, what made you choose Sober Time over the others?

I’m asking because I want to make the app as easy to access as possible, and hopefully we can use the information to grow our user base a bit.

I was in IOP and one of the other peeps in there recommended the app for the day tracker. I dled for the tracker, then discovered the forum.

My first search was for thoughts on AA.

This was my first app based on and around sobriety. It worked for me and it’s the only 1 I have used.

  1. I downloaded it because I saw it had a forum to connect with others. As someone who has anxiety, this was a huge relief to me.
  2. I did both ‘sobriety’ and ‘sober’. I was originally looking for a tracker and a motivator.
  3. The forum and the ability to customize made me download it.
  4. I wasn’t hesitant to download it, but I almost deleted the app because the home screen was confusing for me to set up.
  5. I had 2 other apps downloaded before downloading this one. The forum was definitely the biggest draw.

A guy from out of town came to my group. When he was telling us his sobriety time he had to check his phone. I wasn’t able to talk to him about what app it was before he left. Weeks later I was still relapsing and I attributed it to my not knowing my sobriety date.
I searched in the App Store for “sobriety tracker”
I think I picked sober time based

  1. On reviews
  2. How many permissions it wanted
  3. It was near the top of the list
Nothing seemed off or weird about it. I was the first and only one I tried. It’s a stopwatch…come on.
Now what made me decide to pay for the whole thing is the talking sober forum. That’s what really sold it. I had to stumble upon it, but for me, it’s saved my recovery. I recommend it to everyone in my group :+1:t2:
  1. I was a complete disaster after a ten day holiday bender and I knew I had to stop and searched for a counter.
  2. Can’t remember, it was day 3 and my brain was mush.
  3. It had good reviews and the forum was appealing.
  4. Can’t remember.
  5. No
  6. No, first time lucky, clearly I chose a good one.

I was looking on Google Play for Drink Tracker (and I think that that’s the actual phrase that I searched for) in an attempt to get sober once and for all.
I used other app in the past but this one caught my eye because it has forum and I think that contact with other alcoholics is very valuable

What made you look for a sobriety app?
I had quit drinking and wanted a counter

What search terms did you use to find the app? (If you can remember)
Sobriety or day counter, I don’t remember which

After you searched, a list of possible apps came up. What made you tap on Sober Time?
This one had sobriety time and money saved features like I had desired, it had good ratings and was near the top of the list.

After you went into Sober Time’s store listing, what stood out? Screenshots, reviews, feature description? Nothing honestly that I recall, but it had the features I wanted with screen shots. I downloaded 3 apps to get in to each one and see which one I liked more.

What did you see that made you press the download button?
I liked what I saw

Were you hesitant about anything before downloading? Did something look off?
No

Did you try any other apps before settling on Sober Time?
Yes, 3 others

If so, what made you choose Sober Time over the others? Honestly, I liked the sayings and the photos for the screen. Finding the forum was just a very pleasant accident, it wasn’t my reason for downloading the app but it’s certainly kept me here and sober!

  1. Two girls I sponsor were both using a recovery app. I looked at them & didn’t care for them. So I searched for a better one

  2. ‘recovery app’ or ‘sobriety app’

  3. See #1

  4. The interactive forum feature

  5. No…other then it took me a while to find the forum :joy:

  6. So the apps they were using were called ‘Sober Grid’ (didn’t like to me it seemed very Facebook-like) and ‘Recovery Chat’ (very confusing & hardly any interaction)

Hi Robin,

  1. I wanted to quit drinking
  2. Search terms was for a day counter
  3. I chose this app because I liked the name. I think the reviews were positive.
  4. Screenshots were good I liked the money saved…the forum part was not something I expected… complete surprise and I have been really impressed with this feature…
  5. I was hesitant about what I posted initially but I grew to trust the app and the people on it…

Not sure how easy it is to give feedback on the app… maybe if regulars put feedback on Google store that would help…?

  1. I tried keeping track of when my last relapse was myself for years. Finally I had an epiphany that there should be an app to help addicts with recovery. To help set goals and stuff. Before setting out on my journey to make millions off this original idea, I searched the play store and came upon this app. Dreams crushed. Thanks, @Robin!
  2. I can’t remember exactly. Sobriety tracker, maybe?
  3. I think I selected this one because it had better ratings and better features? I dont remember exactly. It was the only one I downloaded though.
  4. Honestly, all I was looking for was the tracker. And it seemed that the tracker worked well on the app.
  5. I wasn’t hesitant. Everything looked fine.
  6. I chose Sober Time first. It was the only one I looked at. Lucky!

When I first downloaded Sober Time I only used it for the counter and was wary or the forum, since I had to sign up for an account (closet addict). I wish I’d done so sooner. I probably had the app for a month or two before getting on the forum.

I’d definitely suggest increasing your marketing for Talking Sober. If I heard the words confidential or private, I would have been here sooner, and likely would have another 60 days on my counter.

I was looking for a counter, motivation and community to support my sobriety.

The reviews were good

  • After you went into Sober Time’s store listing, what stood out? Screenshots, reviews, feature description? What did you see that made you press the download button?

I liked the counter

  • Were you hesitant about anything before downloading? Did something look off?

I don’t think so

I did. It was called sober grid. I liked the fun memes it had, but the forum here was more well developed and easy to navigate. Same with reddit ur/stopdrinking …it is a good app of reddit and there is a good community, but way too many relapse people early in recovery every day was triggering.

Someone in an AA meeting showed me the app for the tracking days. Then I later discovered the Forum.

  1. A friend I didn’t realize had a problem posted his Sober Time timer on Facebook openly. It gave me pause. After a few days of that it sank in, so I thought maybe it was time to try again myself.
  2. Sober Time!
  3. It was Sober Time.
  4. Aside from the referral, I liked the clean look, customization, and widget. At first I just wanted I nice tracker as a daily reminder…
  5. Nah. Looked very professional.
  6. This was my first and probably my last. Once I installed this I noticed the forum. THAT clinched this app for me, though it didn’t catch my attention when installing it. I spent hours reading before caving and signing up myself.

Thank you again, @Robin and the team, for the app. And to everyone here in the forums for sharing their stories, advice and support!

  1. I wanted to see how long I could go without drinking.
  2. Alcoholics anonymous I think
  3. The color of the icon got me to tap on it.
  4. I liked the reviews and the way it showed the tracking.
  5. My only hesitation was being honest about seeing how long i was actually sober.
  6. I had 2 other apps along with this one. The forum along with the tracking is what made me keep this one and get rid of the others.

Thank you for everyone who has answered thus far. Getting some pretty good info and insight here

It looks like most everyone downloaded it because of the features they saw in the screenshots combined with the good reviews (4.7/5).

It also looks like a lot of people didn’t realize Talking Sober is part of the package and it also seems to be one of their favorite features. I’ll definitely try to make this more prominent in the future.

  1. I recently relapsed, and was wishing to change my behavior and give myself a fighting chance at a possible change. I was a bit desperate, honestly.

  2. I believe I searched for “addiction recovery,” and did so in the Google Play Store on an Android phone; it came up as the top result for me.

  3. Top results, best reviews, I think. The results could have been personalized though haha

  4. The screenshot of the community, and the clean look of the app. I also appreciate automatic goal tracking. I checked everything before clicking the download button, making sure I thought this app could work for me.

  5. I was hesitant just because I didn’t want to get involved in something I shouldn’t be in, like a bad site that wanted my information just to sale it or try to use it to gain control of my account online. I also was afraid my friends my see it as a recommendation to download because I downloaded it, and then they might find out I have an addiction.

  6. I did not tried other apps before Sober Time, but I did afterwards just to make sure I picked the best app. The only other one I have tried is “Pocket Rehab,” but the app feels very sketchy and unsafe to me, and was missing this amazing community.

All in all, i am very thankful I found this app and website! I use both interchangeably and the switch between as I go though my day is seemless. As a tech person, I approve! Thank you all for your contributions and commitments to helping everybody we meet here.
