Eating Disorder- Binge Eating/ Sugar Addict

I am starting my sobriety journey with food. It sounds so weird to say, how can you have an addiction to food? But I have learned you very much can. It’s my drug of choice, when I have had a bad day, sad, anxious, want to celebrate, I will head straight for the cookies, brownies, Diet Coke, coffee, and it consumes me. I have health issues and these foods greatly increase my symptoms but I don’t care - I have to be comforted by them. Growing up in an emotionally abusive home, food was my comfort. I would like to break the cycle, I would like to get my health back. I keep trying and failing, but maybe talking about it out loud will help.

Food can definitely be an addiction!

Welcome to an awesome sober community with people from all across the world fighting various addictions. My advice is to find similarities because the thinking/habits are similar no matter what your DOC (drug of choice).

Just try not to pick up just for today

Welcome to the forum. I have the problem also.

Sugar only makes me want more sugar. I rarely have it and really not at home at all. The safest place for me to have some is away from home, a place where I’m going to be leaving and leaving the source of the sugar.

I also have a problem with cheese.

I have known since I was a child that sugar and pastries, donuts, cookies, cakes and all that kind of stuff sedate me to a certain amount.

When I’m under stress, I tend to eat more of my normal food.

Welcome to the site.

My very first post was an article about how there are ingredients and things like chips and baked goods that make you want more.

You can click on my name and find the article.

Welcome!

I am a sugaraholic as well. I just started a counter on here for binge-eating, and binge-eating for me is usually in the form of sweets. We got this!!

My only advice is to stay busy and active— my appetite is less voracious if I’m doing things like hiking or crocheting.
