Gypsy bread (itā€™s possible you guys calls it something else)

Simple dough with only a few ingredients that can vary depending on what you got (all gypsy recipes is like that)

Itā€™s made in a frying pan, over a fire or in an oven depending on where you are.

And itā€™s used to eat food with, scoop gravy with, fill with food or as a meal with butter, sugar and cinnamon or honey.

We had it for brunch with butter sugar and cinnamon.

This is a tricky one, we are gypsies or Romas. In Swedish Zigenare (from the greek word tsigan, which means hedonic)
In Romani (gypsy language) Zigano means stranger and Roma means human.

We are one people, and share language history and traditions. At least some of us, thereā€™s some variations depending on countries. I speak a variation of Romani Chib which is common in Europe and Balkan. But that doesnā€™t mean that Iā€™m able to speak with the Finnish Romas or even the Swedish ones that we call tatares or Swedish traveller romas (They are a people of their own)

In older times we where travellerā€™s and in some places like in Romania or Turkey we still are. In those places the Romas still barley have any rights, gypsy kids are not allowed in school and are moved around either by the Gouvernment or for having a chance to survive.

In Sweden and some parts of Europe like England there was a rule that didnā€™t allowed gypsies into the towns, forced us to camp outside the city walls and only for one night. After that we had to move/change location. Also they marked the gypsies like you mark cows, by burning a ā€œHobo letterā€ in their chests.

No one really knows the orgin but one of our stories (weā€™ve got a lot if them, all mouth to mouth telling, no writing) goes that we are a people living by our own rules, close to nature and follows no ones religion. So once upon a time when India was risking to go under Islamic rules we fled. And spread across the world, keeping our traditions but adapted to country.

Some of us got a religious believe, Iā€™m raised in church for example. Some of us donā€™t, some of us are Muslims (common in Serbia for example) some of us are Christians, hindus or pagan. Thereā€™s only the history, tradition and language that unites. And because we adapted thereā€™s also a lot of branches that forms different groups of Romas/gypsies.

Itā€™s complicated, but time has changed and at least in Sweden we donā€™t have to travel around anymore and are allowed to own our own houses, being a part of the society.

Some of us still likes to movie around, and Iā€™ve got a lot of places I call home.

We also most often donā€™t wear traditional clothes anymore, in the old times that was a way to recognize a fellow traveler/gypsy but that also made other recognize us so we moved over to ā€œnormalā€ clothes like everyone else.

But once again, itā€™s different in different groups, and for holidays and weddings we go traditional. Some traditions have stayed, most of us girls or boys still have earrings (preferably in gold) golden jewelry works as an insurance if youā€™ve got no money and needs to pay for something. Historically gypsies werenā€™t allowed to own anything, but they couldnā€™t take the ladys jewelries by law, so the gypsies used golden coins and gemstones to create ladies jewelry. We also bath our newborns in gold to give them good fortune in life.

And a golden nose ring or pin similar to the Indian ones are very common.

Thereā€™s also a rule that gypsies marries gypsies, and if you get a child with a non gypsy or with another kind of gypsy people that child becomes a half-breed non welcome anywhere. And thatā€™ll be me, Pa is one kind Ma another one and adopted by missionaries, Me born in Sweden and Married a Serbian guy, a little of everything nothing at all.

Itā€™s a mess, Iā€™m sorry if I made it a lot more complicated :joy:

To end it thereā€™s this new thing called gypsy soul or gypsy by heart but frankly it has nothing to do with us, itā€™s just a way to describe free spirited people with Wanderlust.

I live in Europe and have never heard of it lol

Thereā€™s gypsies all over the world, US and Australia have their own groups and Europe too.

Sometimes we make it to the headlines, usually itā€™s bad publicity but most of the time issues are solved within the group and we fight for our rights outside the headlights because we know we are a minority and doesnā€™t want to involve Gadjos (non gypsies) in our way of living. A lot of roma/gypsy rules and traditions is actually to keep Gadjos away and to protect us from them, because they never meant other than trouble.

Iā€™m sorry if this posts goes a little overboard but this subject is in my heart.

As a gypsy/roma you are required to help. Family goes first, always. But if you can help someone else you do, gadjo or not. If Iā€™ve got food and you donā€™t Iā€™m going to share my food with you, but I wonā€™t eat from the same plate or touch any food youā€™ve been touching so Iā€™ll give you first.

If I donā€™t thatā€™ll make me marime (Unclean) and Itā€™ll get me excluded from family.
I also wonā€™t give you my full name, ever because thatā€™ll give you the power to cast spells or bad luck over me.

Some got one Gypsy/Roma name thay use with family, and another one they use otherwise

Thereā€™s a lot of rules like that,to avoid getting killed, or thrown in jail, or forced to move.
